RIP Ryan Mallett

Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who went on to have a seven-year career in the NFL, died Tuesday in an apparent drowning at a Florida beach, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. He was 35.

The sheriff's office said first responders were called to a beach in Destin, Florida, around 2:12 p.m. local time, as a group of people swimming in the Gulf of Mexico near a sandbar struggled to make their way back to shore. One of the individuals, later identified as Mallett, was not breathing when he was pulled out of the water and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There's these things called rip currents and the ocean has way more endurance than any athlete. You can get stuck in a rip current and try to get out of it for quite awhile before you realize you're even in one, and then you're exhausted and still being pushed out to sea in the middle of waves and can't swim parallel to the shore long enough or can't swim back in. Muscles wont really help in this situation, in fact pro-athlete levels of muscle will probably hurt you more than help you.

You're supposed to swim along the shoreline until you escape the current's pull. When you feel free from the pull of the current you swim at an angle away from the current toward shore. Most of the time you're in a panic though at this point. I almost got caught in one but I had some better swimmers come out and grab me. Scary as chit

On paper and dry land it's relatively easy to say what to do. But when it's happening (and it'll likely take a while before you even realize what's happening, expending valuable energy), it's a different ballgame.

Same here, i was on a boogie board and just kept going out and it took so much strength and energy to pull myself in i was physically exhausted.
A lifeguard ran out to rescue me but i was close enough that he did not have to.
The weird thing is that you have no idea that you are being pulled out until you panic

Same here man.. I was a 5th grader and got ripped out south of LA. Chit was like baywatch man, some chick lifeguard came out and got me..

Stupid me out there with no fins and I didn’t even know what had happened until the waves were just little rollers going under me.

I recall there were several public warnings about people getting caught up in the currents throughout Fla that weekend. Not sure how many died but Mallet wasn't the only one.
