Disagreement with wife

So we have a baby boy with stuff he's growing out of. Like a bouncer chair and clothes. She wants to give all that stuff (bouncer alone was like 150 bucks) for free to her sister.
I'm like no, I want to sell that stuff. She still presses on she wants to give it to her sister, because she says money is not important and we have enough.
I still disagree because I worked for that stuff and it's my stuff. I have a decision too in what happens with that stuff.
Who's right or wrong here?

If you are good in money then you are wrong

It’s family’s you’re giving the items away too, not some stranger. It’s common courtesy to pass baby things down to friends and relatives anyway

I wouldn't have a problem with it. That's what family does.

Unless you’re seriously hurting enough to have a need to sell these things… just hook up your family, dude.

I had a very similar feeling when my wife wanted to give stuff to her brother. Felt like giving money away. Part of having money is not worrying about these kinds of things imo it’s one of the benefits.

But, if it’s family, let it go. I kind of saw it as my money continuing to support the extended family.

NOW if the sister is an ungrateful type I’d be more reluctant.

I would be happy to help out family for the most part but if you don't think you're having more kids (ie you won't want it back at some point) and you have thousands of dollars worth of stuff (& sister and baby daddy are fine financially) I would expect them to insist they give you some compensation or make it up to you in some way down the road.

A lot would depend on each of your financial situations I'd expect.

I understand maybe not giving it to her sister for other reasons, but unless you plan on using it, are tight on money and it's like $1000, I don't think you need to be that stingy. Hell, if you still want it maybe you can just have her borrow it.

You are in the wrong OP. Family is more important than $. Give the hand down s to your sister in laws kids, buy your wife a nice gift and make it up to your wife by taking her out and spending $ on her so she does not start thinking you are a tight wad. Little disagreements tend to weigh down a buildup on your marriage and you don’t want to end up divorced alone and miscing. The quality of wife material females out there in the single world is very few and only gets worse when you get older. Live and learn

Pick your battles bro. Every woman with a sister or a friend that’s having a child feels obligated to donate anything they can.

It’s not worth the argument over $150 and the time it takes to take pictures and list your used baby gear. Live to fight another day.

Your wife is right. It's not like she wants you to buy them a car. Helping out family is a much better idea than worrying about a $150 bouncer and used baby clothes.

Meh...

By the time my kids out grew all that stuff I was ready to get it out of the way , some of it went to family members that were expecting... some if it went to Goodwill... I didnt care about trying to sell it for a few bucks , just didnt seem like good use of my time if I am honest about it.

But you are also talking about a guy that picked up a used Washer / Dryer set while we were waiting on ours to get delivered ( backordered like a month at the time) and ended up giving them to a lady I didnt even know and had never met. This lady was a friend of my in-laws who they had known for years and had fallen on some hard times after her husband has passed away suddenly... its a long story so I wont bother with details... but this used washer and dryer was bought for $350 (nothing crazy by any means) , some basic a$$ front loaders. She was in awe that someone would give her something "so fancy and nice"...

long story short (too late I know) , sometimes helping people will pay you back in ways actual money simply cant.

God dammit I cant stand cheap people, especially when it comes to family. Be the bigger / better person and get over yourself. Your wife is 100% right, and you are self centered / selfish / stingy / cheap.

one would think the sister will be thankful and down the road might help you two with something you need. know what i mean?

hopefully your wife didn't say to her sister "well i want to give you this but (husband) wants to sell it instead."
also going forward you're going to have to just let this go. do not resent the sister forever over this. you'll never be happy and it'll compound over time.

Give it to her.

You're not going to make much money selling it anyhow.

Are you planning on having another kid? If so, keep that stuff, or at least just give it to her sister, and if you guys decide to have another kid, make sure that the agreement is that she'll give the stuff back.

If you're not having another kid, then yeah give her the stuff. My sister in law gave us a chit ton of stuff when we had our little guy. Unless you guys are like, really hurting financially or something.

If you are done with it (not having more kids who would need it) I"d say there is no reason to hang on to it.
I like you have the reaction, dont give it away sell it. However, the effort it takes and the amount you get out of it, i've found isn't worth it (at least to us) so i've learned when my wife wants to give something like that away, I just let her. Wasn't easy to get to to, but i've learned over the years. Some things we will sell, but kids things not worth it in my opinion.
