the moment you agreed to let her casually date is the moment you lost her, she lost all respect for your integrity as a man.

I didn't like it but I thought some space would be good for us. I thought she would realize how much she loved me and missed me, and come crawling back. At first, that was true, but the she started dating the Russian guy a few months later and it was all downhill after that. He helped her cope at first and I guess she decided she loved him by the end. I got replaced

Again she's conservative Catholic so I don't think she would leave anyone after she got married. But that doesn't mean she wouldn't end up making me want to leave though lol

So I had an amazing relationship with a girl, and for three years it was perfect. The honeymoon phase went on for years. She was completely dedicated to me. The only problem was that she wanted to get married and have kids, and I didn't. I mentioned my feelings a few times, but we usually didn't talk about it and just enjoyed each other's company. We never fought and almost never argued.

Things started to sour in the fourth year, and she became more and more distant. Yet she rarely talked about her feelings. I couldn't seem to fix things. Then, after she graduated from college, she decided to study abroad for a year and get her Masters. I was very surprised by her decision. Due to the circumstances, we decided to go on a break, create a little space, casually date other people, and then get back together when she returned. You can see where this is going. Well, instead she met some Russian cuck that worshiped the ground she walked on. He was ready to marry her on day one. In fact, he was already divorced and had 2 kids back in Russia. She casually dated him for a year, delaying her return to the US because she had a teaching job there and she was busy applying to grad schools for her PhD. She always insisted that her relationship with this guy wasn't serious, and she was still affectionate to me.

To make a long story short, she finally came home for Christmas after 1.5 years of being my lovey-dovey best friend. But then, out of the blue, she refused to talk to me or see me. Finally allowed me one phone call and said it was over, she was marrying the Russian guy, and we were done. She insisted the decision was final, and she couldn't talk to me anymore. Completely blindsided me. Afterwards, I told her I needed to talk about things more, but she ignored all my calls and messages.

So I ended up losing the love of my life. Once the initial shock settled and the crippling realization set in, I freaked out and tried to propose. I told her she meant everything to me, that we could get married and work out all our problems. And I meant it. But that only seemed to make her angrier and she has blocked me on all social media since.

In the end, I am absolutely devastated, and losing her made me realize how much I truly did love her. It is the biggest kick in the balls one can imagine. I am completely filled with regret. I feel like I let "The One" get away. Yet I didn't actually want to marry and have kids. I was willing to make the sacrifice in the end, but I still felt unsure about signing my life away to fatherhood. On the other hand, given the choice of losing her forever or compromising, I was more than willing to compromise. But sadly, it was too little, too late.

So Misc, did I dun goof, or did I dodge a bullet in the end?

When they want to take a break, they think there is something better than what they have now and want to test it out to see if it's worth ending.

Love alone is not enough, modern romance is way more complicated. You two are clearly not compatible when it comes to marriage and kids. Let her go.

You’ll get over this. My ex was saying the same thing to me when we broke up about regrets and how what if I am the one blah blah all rubbish. Soon after he found a new girl and everything we had is nothing but history. Which also gave me the clarity that there’s no such thing as the one. We have hundreds if not thousands of soulmates.

You’re only desperate right now because you don’t have another option. Calm down.

They haven't had sex. I'm the only person she's had sex with. Now that she "learned from her mistakes," she won't have sex again until she's married.

And he's not alpha, he basically grovels at her feet. She's grown to like it.

Only time will tell mate.

You can either be sad for life and never get back on track with a devastating ending or get your **** together and move on.

Accept that you had the time of your life with your love but now it's time to move on and find somebody else. Don't hate her, embrace her for being part of your life!

One day you will look back at that dark time you're going through now and it will all make sense to you

I'm in my 30s and I've had multiple long-term relationships. However, I was her first boyfriend. That's why we ended up agreeing that she needed to try seeing other people and do some casual dating, just so she could see what it was like. And then she could come back to me. The Russian guy is only her second boyfriend. He's my age and divorced.

I mean, she was be gone for a year and she had never dated anybody else. I was her first and only boyfriend. I didn't understand relationships after my first girlfriend either. So it seemed to make sense. I thought she would always come back to me. She told me that the Russian guy was not the one, it was not true love - she knew what true love felt like, and that wasn't it. But somehow, behind the scenes, things changed.

Was going to say you should have effectively communicated and told her why you weren't ready to settle down just yet. But I was also assuming you were younger than this, so there's that. When you turned down kids at that age, that was already setting a red flag for her, and then you actually convinced her to date other people to see if she was ready to be committed to you? What were you thinking? That was the deal breaker, she took your advice and found someone better.

That’s an either or choice ...you get to pick one
I mean, I still didn't throw her away. I was committed to her. We spent all our time together. I tried to fix things...by doing everything except proposing. I can see now that I screwed up, but I didn't throw her away. In the end, she left me.

True, but since I was her first boyfriend and she would be gone for a year, it seemed like a reasonable request. It was just going to be some casual dating. I had dated a number of girls before her.

Uh, what? She's had sex with one guy, and that's me. And that's because she thought we would get married. She's dated one other guy, and they haven't had sex. She's moved extremely slowly with the new guy.

You keep talking about their relationship as if you're a part of it. She's done with you and you need to be done with them.

When it really came down to it, I was ready to give her everything. I think love would've been enough. All in all, we were involved (best friends/dating) for about 6 1/2 years. How long were you and your ex together?

I would never drop this girl, we were too close and what we had was too special. We were How I Met Your Mother junkies and if you've never seen it, Tim and Robin end up marrying other people, but Tim's wife dies and Robin gets divorced, and they end up marrying at the end. We talked as if that were us - even if we dated or married other people, we would end up together in the end. She was passionate about that, she said she felt like she belonged to me. But in the end, once she got comfortable with somebody else, she kicked me to the curb.

I've dated enough people to know I will never meet another girl like this. I'll find another option but it won't be nearly as good.

I’m sorry but that is the definition of making a woman feel unloved and unwanted. How is that not throwing her away ?
I'll take that one farther.

You are a coward. Don't know what else to call it when a man your age is "afraid she will change".

There are no guarantees for any relationship. You risk bleeding for it every time.

If you aren't willing to take that risk then just own it.

Plenty of people have decided to hang it up and more will do the same.

Timothy knows what's up. But truthfully you were doomed either way. You stay with her and her curiosity about sampling others schlongs would have done you in. You take a break and next thing you know she's playing hide the kielbasa with Vladimir.

Good stuff mate and repped. Thanks for the kind words. I do celebrate the times we had, and I don't regret it one bit. I only regret my mistakes and how it all ended. In the very least, I thought we would be amicable. But now that she's thrown me in the trash, a little anger is good for now.

You're right, bro. I was in my late 20s at the time. I'm now in my 30s, and I'm ready. I didn't convince her to date other people, that was her idea and I think it came from her mother. She told me I was her first boyfriend and she needed to just get the experience of dating somebody else. Obviously, I didn't like the idea, but I came to accept it. I knew I wouldn't be ready to marry after my first girlfriend either. So I argued at first, but I relented once she got ready to leave. And we were just going to be on a break, not broken up, just a pause until she got back.
