My mum killed my cat. My lovely cat was called Erroll after Erroll Brown in Hot Chocolate, because she was a long haired black cat and as a kitten when I put her in a jumbo mug her fur overflowing looked like a hot chocolate drink. Okay so now I sound like an abusive pet owner. She was 19 years old so probably lived past most cats.

Even so, my mum asked to have Erroll for company as she is alone so I begrudgingly agreed. My mum went on holiday asked her neighbour to look after Erroll but decided to stay a few days later not mentioning it to anyone so poor Erroll died of dehydration.

Then my mum asked for ยฃ750 and said "I do so much for you".

OMG. All of that is so incredibly awful. I'm sorry for your loss. And in such a stupid, careless way...how hard is it to contact someone to let them know to watch the cat a few more days? Then to ask money for it afterwards. So messed up. You given any thought on ending that relationship?

Yes, she is a hideous revolting, woman. When I was due brain surgery she asked at my bedside 'if you die now, can you give me your son. Let's get a pen and paper and get it in writing.' Thank goodness his dad is in his life.

After surgery due to not being able to work I regretfully lost our home and we effectively became homeless. Only had a roof over our heads because we 'lived' in my business premises. My mum has a large collection of houses she rents out but refused to help us claiming it was my fault. Simultaneously she was sending and continues to send ยฃ3000 a month to an African man (who claims he uses the money to help out his 'brothers' wives. Yep sure, cool story bro) and today asked me to make up the shortfall.

I detest the woman. There is no relationship. I spoke to the psychiatrists after my tumour to check on my mental health after, luckily I'm fine. Told him about how my mum gets me down. At this age I had no idea it was unusual behaviour (explains my relationships to similar people) and he diagnosed her with narcissism. He warned me to stay well away from her and I have done. My brother has too and my sister moved to another country.

I can completely relate. I would love to completely cut ties with my mother and my sister for very similar reasons...but until my niece/nephews are over 18, I'll tolerate interacting with them so that at least those kids have an avenue to go to when it gets too hard to handle. Honestly I just wish the world would do more in educating people about narcissism and other cluster B personality disorders. Thanks to the way I was raised, I ended up getting stuck in a 10 year relationship with a narcissist that I barely survived. Problem was, I didn't even recognize it as abuse because it is what I thought was normal.

Your idea to educate is a great one. I have taught my boy about manipulation (in easy child friendly terms) as my mum started frequently calling him a "horrible little boy" which was very upsetting for him. I explained some people will call a person names in order to get them to try and prove otherwise or to win an argument or get what they want.

Similarly when I disagreed with my mum she called social services on me claiming I was brainwashing my son. I had disagreed regarding a TV debate about whether or not immigrants should speak English. I had said they should as none speakers are often human trafficked and there is an increasing illegal modern slave trade in UK. My mum told social services I was brainwashing him into a racist. I mean that's a huge fukking jump. She completely took my opinions out of context. My only thoughts were on the statistics I know to be true here in UK and ease to abuse those who can't ask for help.

It's this bizarre "political correctness " like this which makes me uneasy too. It's excellent to be considerate of others but political correctness can be manipulated into abuse also. My mum was willing to "fight racism" by trying to get her grandson removed from his "racist " mother into a home. And her argument is frequently political correctness probably because it receives a lot of approval from the masses. It's a convenient shield.

JFC that's awful, what an absolute kunt

Your posts sound like you are still in contact with her, is that the case? What's the deal with your father in this set up?

She lives seven miles away. She has said she will follow wherever I go should I move. I feel like I have to stick around so as my son enjoys a relationship with his dad who lives locally.

I spoke to my dad earlier. My parents had a long difficult divorce. It took nine years, was extremely costly and my dad worked into his seventies to ensure he is able to give us kids some inheritance. He believes (because she has threatened) that she won't leave anything to any of us. We have to put up with too much chit and the threat was constantly "do as I say or you don't get anything." Well we all decided we don't want anything from her.

When growing up my dad sided with my mum. I guess it made life easier for him but he knows the impact that had on us. My most vivid memory is of my mum dragging my sister down the stairs by her hair and I hid under the stairs. My sister ran away after that to a boys house and they are still together to this day. They have done really well. After my sister ran away I became the target. I don't remember my brother ever having any trouble with my mum. He still doesn't but my mum hates his wife.

One of the things I'm often grateful for is growing up in a loving supportive environment, I can't imagine how hard it would be to have your own parent undermining and even attacking you.

Sounds like she's determined to control you by whatever means she can, I agree it's a much better choice to live your own life than kowtow in order to inherit. One thing to note, it's not completely straightforward to disinherit your family, even adult children. You're probably aware of that anyway, you're studying law right? So she might be **** out of luck.

So do you have regular contact with her? Do you still lend her money?

Thank you very much for taking the time to find that article. It's really kind of you.
I live seven miles from her.
We don't have regular contact but she would insist that she had my son on one of my weekends to have him as "grandma rights". So I would see her at drop off. And she helped through my exams. She isn't all bad. She does some very nice things, but she balances that with some evil things. Maybe not intended but lack of standard of care and consideration she expects from others means a harm (physical, mental or both) is caused which could have been avoided.
I don't lend her money. I'm a single student mother. I'm shocked she comes to me for so much. She buys 6 holidays a year. I told her she needs to live within her means. I'm a saver. My priority in life is to save because I am concerned about my son in his future. There are less jobs about and will be less in future. I want to support him. I don't want to see him struggle. I don't want to loan hundreds. Even if I get the money back.

And this is the issue. I start to reason everything. Question if I'm being too mean. Question if I should be more supportive. Consider that it was an accident and then feel angry towards myself for not being more reasonable. Catch 22 which is why this is horrible situation.

That part sucks. I deal with that every so often...doubting myself, wondering if I'm being over sensitive and blowing things out of proportion. Doesn't help that my immediate family certainly thinks I am and just don't seem to understand why I can't get over it and just go back to the way things were before (cause that would be easy for them). At those times I'll either talk to my Aunt and she'll reassure me that I shouldn't doubt myself (she is completely aware of the entire situation and lived thru it herself) or I'll just run thru a few of the things she has done in the past that were completely unacceptable. Doesn't take many before I reassure myself.

It is that damn cognitive dissonance the really messes you up. This person is your mother...the person that is suppose to care about you and protect you more than anyone else, they aren't supposed to be abusive...yet they are in a way that is so incredibly toxic.

Probably one of best things to happen to me was to grow up in chaos. Learned so much at such a young age about survival and getting what you want for yourself.

No worries, just keep it in mind that someone can tell you 'LOL, you are disinherited!', but they may not be able to do so. No point in getting into it with your mother but if you are on good terms with your sibs, you may be able to make an amicable agreement to split the estate when it happens because she has zero chance of cutting out her entire family and sending it off to charities and African scam merchants.

Makes sense, to be honest I wouldn't trust her with a child though.

It's very difficult for normal empathic people to fully understand on a instinctive level that a manipulative monster is not worthy of their time and respect, especially when that person is their own parent. Also, even terrible people have redeeming features, very few villains are full-time cackling sociopaths. Hitler loved his dogs and was generous to his friends. Stalin was a charming man with a good sense of humour.

FWIW I really don't think it was an accident that something you loved unconditionally died under your mother's care, which is why I'd be nervous of leaving her in charge of your son. From the way you have described her, I doubt she'd openly attack him but she's absolutely capable of putting him in dangerous situations and then washing her hands of the consequences.

Thank you for your response. Regarding inheritance us siblings have come to a verbal agreement, however we suspect the money will be given to the African guy and a relationship can be proven. When I used to visit her, whenever he called he would ask to speak to me. I just couldn't speak to him. I'm not sure he is a scam artist. I certainly don't get the impression he intended to scam her. She chose to send money to him. She can likely control (or feel she's controlling) him better.

Before our parents divorced my dad bought me one of the homes my mum now has ownership of, under the understanding that I would pay back the mortgage to him. At the time in my twenties I was unable to raise a mortgage. It was a verbal contract and I will be looking into my options regarding this case.
One of the wonderful experiences of doing law is that I have been taught how to argue my case rationally with other rational people.
Anyway I'm going to put a close to this subject because it's unbelievably emotionally draining.

But on another note, one of my best friends started a university course with me, hers in science. She is a single mother of two, she's Hungarian, she worked part time whilst attending the course full time. She amazes me, she's just incredible and tenacious. Amongst all of this she has had to find the money to apply for citizenship with all of this Brexit uncertainty (my bad) and rightly so she has been asked to give a speech at the university this evening. I'm so honoured she asked me to be her guest. She told me I have been her rock through it all and really supportive. Thank fuk I turned out OK.

thread is done. has been for a while, unfortunately. oh well, I've gotten so much out of it over the years, especially when I'd have it open all day while I droned away in my old office job.

If I knew how to handle alcohol I'm sure there could have been. I had to get home to my son anyway as my friends mother was looking after both our kids and doesn't speak English. My friends son has autism so it was a big ask from her mum.
On another note...

Have I missed something?
Why are there angry posts at you?
I left the thread for a while but I noticed it before. I'm not trying to ignite the situation but what is this all about if you don't mind me asking.?

Pros n cons to it all.
I'd say I learned a lot about survival too. To the point where I trust no one. My reason for setting up my own business was because I felt I couldn't trust employers lol, likewise my brother and sister also have set up successful businesses.
Interestingly I was dating a seriously rich guy not so long back and he too had similar issues with his dad. He also refused to work for anyone and was completely self reliant so what you're saying I completely agree with.
For the sheer sake of survival you learn some necessary skills but likewise you lose the knowledge of what a stable person is. Your understanding is that the crazy person who brought you up is a stable normal person and you actively search for that person to have friendships and relationships with. I'm not sure if my outlook would have been different if I had been brought up in a city amongst a larger population. I'm not sure if you had that opportunity either and if so did it help you understand better?

I'm putting together a loft bed for my son this weekend. He gave me space to do my revision so I decided to get him the bed he wants, but fuk it's heavy. I'm not sure I can put it up now that I have got it. It will certainly do a good job replacing the weight. It will definitely be interesting.
