Beef prices rise as U.S. cattle herd falls to lowest level in 75 years
Beef prices continue to climb as the nation’s cattle inventory drops to its lowest level in decades, creating higher costs for consumers and challenges for producers. The average price of a pound of ground beef reached nearly $6.75 in May, about 75 cents higher than the same time last year.Industry leaders say the increase is tied to a shrinking national cattle herd.
The U.S. cattle inventory now sits at just over 86 million head, the lowest level since 1951.According to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, several factors have contributed to the decline, including years of drought in western states and rising operating costs for producers. Expenses for fuel, fertilizer, equipment and interest rates have all increased in recent years, making it difficult for ranchers to expand their herds. While cattle numbers have fallen nationwide, Iowa has fared better than many other states.
The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association says Iowa’s cattle inventory has remained relatively steady thanks to favorable weather conditions and strong feed resources. Even so, tighter supplies across the country are contributing to higher beef prices at grocery stores.

Usually I can find a steak for $10-14/lb on sale
Couldn't find anything less than $17.49/lb last week
My stomach has been hurting more often after eating beef these days as well. Imma have to start increasing my beef budget to no less than $20/lb now. It's over for the brokies.

My sister's a veterinarian with an emphasis on large animals and called me a couple of weeks ago ranting about how there's this screw worm outbreak in Texas that has huge implications for beef nationwide. Bunker down and prepare for it to get worse bros
