how cool are octopuses?

ive fallen into a rabbit hole of researching octopus and they are amazin. ive determined theyre or almost smarter than dogs or cats. which is strange for a non vertabrae species.

they have 9 brains, each tentacle has its own brain, sense, feeling of the world, they all send signals back to a "central brain" which is a donut shaped brain around the top of their mantel. they remember humans, they are self aware, they hold eye contact, they "play" etc.

there are plenty of stories of aquarium owners having octopus and fish in other tanks, often times they figure out how to open their tank lid, crawl to a fish tank, eat fish, then crawl back to their own tank before the owner returns lol.

Kinda sucks because one of my favorite dishes is grilled octopus but they are such cool creatures. Didnt know people had them as pets

look into octopus, just youtube a few videos. you will realize they are smart. much smarter than pigs. remember, we're talking about a non vertabrae animal. most species with higher intelligence is vertabrae. octopus have no bones. they only live 2-5 years. and they're pretty small so it's amazing how smart they are.

They are apparently fantastic problem solvers

I'm not sure its the same high level thinking, like deep thinking, we do but they can solve problems for sure.


Edit:

I guess what I mean by that is they can solve the problem to escape the tank but likely haven't thought about any problems that they might occur in doing so. Whereas humans, we didn't escape the Earth before thinking through the consequences of going into a new environment like space.

They are kind of like in the moment problem solvers but intelligence doesn't extend beyond whats right in front of them.

obv they cant deep think. the point is though they're very smart for a non human(esp non vertabrae). they know how to open jars and solve puzzles. i know for sure my dog couldnt figure out that a jar lid needs to twist to come off.

what other animals think of what u made in ur edit? not many. maybe a monkey

also remember reading their eye is very similar to humans (can see with clarity & multicolors...I think most animals only see some filtered pic of everything).

Yeah I made an edit to clarify. Put something in front of them and they can work through a solution is basically what they do.

i doubt it is conscious of time, but it clearly is smart enough to recognize a threat vs non threat, even if it is a unsual being like a human diving.
