“If you're still poor at 35, you deserve it.” - Jack Ma

Jack Ma’s point is simple, by 35 he believes people should have taken enough chances, made enough mistakes, and learned from them. He is speaking from his own experience of being rejected from jobs, failing repeatedly, and still starting Alibaba in 1999. That does not mean everyone has the same opportunities, but it does explain why his words keep starting arguments about age, responsibility, and success.

He's right. 16 - 29 full of mistakes you should learn from. 30 - 35 correcting those mistakes.

I had my life set at 35, it wasn't exactly the life I wanted, but a negotiated lifestyle with my ex-wife. I wanted to do things with my career that she wasn't willing to do. Regardless we were set up for a nice middle upper class life. 3600 sq ft house in a nice suburb of Chicago, 2 kids, 2 dogs. A nice normal suburban nightmare. My ex pulled the rug from under me and filed for divorce 3 years later.

Started over, things are on track to be much better than any future I envisioned with her.

How much did she bang you for?

Lump Sum?

Alimony and Child Support?

A lot of truth to this I think. I mean, it's crazy how quickly 4 years go by when you're our age. It only takes 4 years to get an undergrad. By 35, you could technically have had multiple degrees and multiple careers

she got 50% of our assets and Child support, essentially she got the house and I got my retirement accounts. She worked and made half what I did, and it was enough for no alimony.

Kid 1 is off child support, a couple years for kid 2, we are splitting college costs

I don't care about the money anymore, it was a huge deal just after the divorce, but what I pay is for the kids, not her and it will be over soon enough

I don't have a desired retirement date. I don't mind work, and given the career trajectory I had with her I exected to work until I was 65 or 70. I may not need to without her, but what will I do with my time? Probably start or buy a business and work some more.

Currently 39 with a paid in full house. On my way to being a multi millionaire with my investments and a hefty pension on top that will already pay for more than I need.

Yep and most of society feels this way even if they don't say it out loud. 35 is the number where you start to get stuck in your ways and if those ways are trash there really isn't much hope for you. Nobody is going to waste their time either.

The biggest problem is people aren't taught responsible financial strategies when they are young. You do not have to be an entrepreneur or have a super high income to live a really good life.

I was lucky to discover Dave Ramsey as a teen. And to think his strategy was perfectly reasonable. Start working young. When living with your parents save 50% of your income. When you hit 18 do not YOLO on credit card purchases. Don't YOLO a car loan. Pay cash for stuff. If you do use a credit card to 'build credit'. Then pay it off every month. Only buy what you have cash to cover. Once you move out on your own you keep squirreling away money into savings. Keep a 6 month emergency fund. Invest aggressively into ETF's while young. Keep a 'fun' savings account for cash purchases. Make sure you spend less then you earn, Etc.

At 39 life is on easy mode. House is paid for. A paid for truck, boat, motorcycle, and wife drives a 80K luxury car. 2 'good' vacations a year. Take time off in winter for camping/hunting that I don't consider vacations but is pretty much the same thing. Debt free. Investment portfolio will have me retiring with millions even if I quit investing... Looking at a partial retirement in my 40s. Will be fully retired by 50-54. Etc.

I really think people's biggest problem is we live in a consumerist economy. Dudes want to have the nicest shit when they are young. And they piss away their future in order to get it.

I should be comfortable by 35 if I continue on the current path. I won’t be a millionaire, but my income potential has increased substantially with my promotion. I’m still at the bottom of what the market is paying for this role, however after I get a year of experience should be able to demand upwards of $80k.

The unfortunate part is none of this will bring joy or fulfillment, but as long as I stay healthy, life will be better down the line.

I think there are certain health issues that can bankrupt anyone at any age. I'm poor not just because of my medical bills, but having to also completely change careers from an injury.

So the serious answer to the OP is, the most important variable to success is luck. The best example I like to use is that the Facebook Jew got rich when he was 20 while the McDonalds guy got rich when he was 50. Was the McDonalds guy just lazy for 30 years? Of course not, he was probably working hard all those 30 years, just with no luck.

For the average person, by the time they're 35, enough time has passed that statistically, they should have had enough luck to achieve some measure of success. What Jack Ma is saying is generally correct. However, some people are just really unlucky. We have a case in point ITT. GuineaDago585 works harder and smarter than most miscers but is a worse position than most miscers. Another example is from Jack Ma's own culture, if you were growing up in China during the cultural revolution, you could be the smartest and hardest working person on the planet and still not amount to anything.

I would also add, financial guru advice only applies if you make great money. It's useless for those that don't make much. If you're rich, you're going to be rich. If you're poor, you're not going to be rich.
