Opening up my entire sales territory to the entire USA - what should I know about how Americans conduct business

Off the top of my head and what I’ve heard

- more direct and upfront
- less time for formalities … succinct and to the point, I’ve heard Americans will be pissed if you ask them how they are etc
- quicker sales cycle
- they won’t actually ghost you like Canadians they have the ability to say fuck off which I appreciate .. Canadians are passive aggressive, people pleasers who can’t say no

Pretty pumped tho, means I can travel to different American cities every month if I’m able to get meetings

I honestly have the same job as that homeless guy you encountered but I do it in a suit and not from a parking lot.

If he was a little more direct with his intro would he have closed the deal and gotten some change?

I used to work B2B sales (worst job I ever had). You’re pretty much on point. Americans have less time for bullshit, but we will absolutely still ghost you.

You also need to understand regional differences. Americans from the Northeast behave very differently from those in the Deep South or California. In Canada I feel like you brahs all share the same general cultural norms from coast to coast (excluding Quebec).

Lots of joggers and Heb's, keep the misc humor to a minimum. If you want to sound like a local say something like "with this investment you can have a whole summer down at the shore, instead of JUST one weekend".

Research the local teams, many uninteresting men in the Northeast fixate on sports.

Pretty much. Economy is much larger as well so our revenue from the USA ended up growing much faster than our Canadian revenue.

Ghosting in sales is accepted. Mostly because nobody wants to put in the effort of telling you to fuck off.

Are you cold calling or did these people call you? Do they even know what your product is?

I don't even answer calls from people I don't recognize the number

But at work is a bit different I will answer but if it's a wrong number on my spam call I will just hang up

Canada is brutal selling into man

You exhaust your prospects so quickly because there just aren’t enough of them

I’m sure selling into nyc will be more exciting than Winnipeg lol

I won’t be too specific but a niche investment strategy to RIAs (registered investment advisors)

Gonna try and do so well they have no choice but to move me to the U.S.

I don't ghost people I have relationships with(unless they turned into a piece of shit or something and the relationship is dead). However, I will definitely ghost someone that cannot provide me any value. It's the best way to deal with anybody, as it doesn't waste anybodies time.

The thing is, I’ve closed business from cold calls and sometimes it’s taken me 5 plus tries to get someone on the phone.

I tried a guy once every couple weeks for months once that had no idea who I was and he ended up putting 55m into our fund 18 months later

I think my industry might be a bit different, cold out reach is acceptable and I hear US investors move A LOT more money, a lot quicker and are always looking at cool and niche ideas .. less conservative than Canadians

Yeah, of course there are people who would be great clients who you just can't reach for whatever reason. Obviously its silly to give up on them, you just need to change your approach sometimes.

Take what you sell and multiply by 12. That’s what you’ll sell at least. And it’ll take half the time.

I have a guy who I used to work with in Canada that does the same thing but now does it in Texas and he basically said the same thing

He says there’s just so much more money, Americans are less risk adverse, more curious and less stuck in their ways etc

If I can multiply what I sell by 12 I’ll be rich in a few years

Canada fucking sucks lol

Succinct. Always succinct. Have your sales sheet, walk in, introduce yourself, say "I know your time is valuable, so I'll be brief". And then actually be brief. Make quick points on how you are confident you can save them time and money and streamline (even if it's bullshit). That's it.

East coast people like that are going to constantly shit test you to see if you know what you’re talking about.

I grew up different so I hate playing those games but that’s how it is over there.

Whatever you tell them, the first thing they are going to say back is they already have someone providing that service at half the cost and providing double the results. Don’t get rattled, but you’re going to have to figure out a way to get past that, that works for you
