What most people don't realize when celebrating the 4th of July

Great Britain helped the settlers, who were themselves British, develop the original 13 colonies

Without support from Great Britain it wouldn't have been possible

Then the settlers after they got what they wanted betrayed their benefactors by revolting against the very people who helped them

They couldn't do it alone though

Great Britain was putting them in their place during the Revolutionary War

So they got the French, who were a major military power at the time, to help them with their betrayal (look up France's role in the Revolutionary War if you're unaware)

It would be like if in modern times a group of American citizens settled on a remote land with the help of the U.S.

Then if they revolted and got a foreign country to help them in their revolt

It's one of those instances where the bad guys won

So if you celebrate the 4th of July you're actually celebrating a traitorous victory
