Do you address someone with a PhD as "doctor"?

Technically they are since PhD means Doctor of Philosophy

So a PhD even in fields such as history, music, drama, and education can use "Dr" as their title

Just like a physician or surgeon

You guys know that the term "Doctor" for a learned person far predates modern medicine?
PharmD Pharmacists are literally doctors of medicine and it's not customary to address them as "Doctor."
Just know that nothing makes any sense at all.

Zero chance unless you are a physician and in the proper setting. Out in the world it’s just “John” who happens to be a Dr.

Depends. Regarding an actual "doctor" in the sense of, physician, then usually.

Outside of that, it's an ego thing. 99 times out of 100 the ones specifically asking you to call them doctors are the type who have a PhD in art history or gender studies. I do a ton of work in the biotech/life science field and in the past 20 years I literally have never had a single one of the scientists with PhD's ask me to call them doctor so-and-so. It's always call me "Stacy" or "Jim".

Exactly this lmao, I have a DPT, I don't even like my patient's calling me Dr., meanwhile social science PhDs refer to themselves as "Dr." EVERYWHERE

Having worked among phds for many years, you never call them doctor.

Only at events like industry conventions when introducing someone as a speaker, would you mention "dr shekleberg" or whoever is about to speak to the audience.

At work nobody calls them "dr mike" or shit. Nobody.

Its cringe to even try to include a "dr" in casual conversation.
