need help getting out of Debt. Dun goofed it up bad. (pic)

hey

Long story short, I lost my job and racked up some massive debt. I got screwed over in my phone plan by friend who dipped the country and Owe 2k for my phone plan. I learned my lesson about that. Angry as that I got my self in this terrible situation.

Amex 5,793.83
CC 1363.95
phone 2,037.58

= 9195.36

on top of that I have a 2 speeding ticket = 400 more dollars.

I currently have about 800 cash.

I just got my job and I make any about 11/hr plus 9/hr in tips working 4-6 days a week.
Also really need a phone to communicate so I have to get a new plan as well.



Im hoping to pay this off possibly in the 4 summer months, But its just daunting to look at. Any advice

How is it possible to owe that much on a phone bill. Did you miss your last 5 years of payments?

Work more hours or get a second job
Put all that money towards the debt
I paid off everything CC wise .. And it feels good

I still use them .. But I pay weekly and keep them real low
Just so I can get the points / cash back

For the cell phone.. I dont know about CDN but in the US we can get prepaid monthly phones for cheap... Like 35 for everything a month

I just got a job about 3 weeks ago, getting back on my feet. Its really hard to find another job atm in this economy.

You might try talking to someone at your bank about rolling all of that debt into a single line of credit with a low interest rate. Then you make one monthly payment and just forget about it until you pay it off.

I had like 10 times that much debt while I was in school

Live like you are below the poverty line and put every available cent towards the debt until it's paid off. Seriously, live as if every purchase requires a blood sacrifice. You need to be free and this will also help reset the bad spending habits that got you that far in debt in the first place.

Once out of debt, build up a safety fund of 6 months living expenses in the bank for future cases where you lose your job.

Then resume life.

your credit rating is only ruined if you made late payments

make sure you make at least your minimum payments each month
in terms of it being ruined by high utilization, this is true, but will correct itself quickly as you pay down your debt

1st thing- go set up a payment plan for the speeding tickets. You do not want to "leave that for later".

I was going to suggest getting another card with a 0% balance transfer option, but you likely would not get approved since your Amex is maxed out. Your best bet may be to get a personal loan with a lower interest rate as suggested above and paying the card with that, but don't be stupid and start charging stuff on your card again.

Get a prepaid phone. Stop eating out. Live like you're broke, get it paid off over the summer. 9 grand is something you can get a handle on, fortunately.
