Lmao. With that kind of attitude why even do anything? Pretty sure the world isn't ending anytime soon. Humanity has survived the black plague, world wars, etc. What's the biggest problem in the 1st world right now? Some economic problems and global warming? End times...ahahah.

Actually it's very easy for her to pay the debt off if she does the things I mentioned in the above post. If she's learned from her mistakes and you genuinely believe that I wouldn't be concerned. If she rolls her eyes or start blaming other people for the debt, Run.

In other words all women are retards that's not something to concern yourself with. If you wait around for a genuinely smart one you'll die a virgin. What you need to concern yourself with is victim complexes and financial selfishness. If neither of those are the issue and she was just being a clueless idiot, that's forgivable

With law school, medical school, etc. it is quite possible to have that and more. The average debt from a private law school these days is north of 120k. Not saying it's great to get into that sort of debt, but it's not uncommon for professional school.

BTW, OP, I don't know where you are located but here in California (and other community property states), student loans taken out DURING MARRIAGE become jointly owed debt. However (and she's your girlfriend still, per you) federal loans taken out before marriage WILL NOT BECOME THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SPOUSE. So, generally, unless you willingly cosigned it will not be your responsibility. All of this depends on two factors, of course:

1. Whether the loans are federal or private

2. Which state you live in

OPie pepper your angus

I think the bigger issue isn't the debt as much as she doesn't really want to deal with it and has an attitude when it is brought up. I question her judgement and ability to take things head on as they come.

Seems like she's a chick that just wants to kick that bucket down the road and hold off from dealing with reality.

$50K a year
After taxes she's left with what $40K ?

Food , Clothes, Gas = $7,000/year (and that's frugal as ****).

Now down to $33K

Car Payment ? $300/month = $3,600/year

Down to $26,400

Student Loans ? $700/month = $8,400/year

Down to $16,000

Rent ? Utilities ?
$800/month =$9,600/year

Down to $6,400 / year.

Say CC us $25K including interest.

I'd say 6 years but thats living like a monk and not incurring any new debt.

So roughly 120K in debt, which is a little more than a 2.2 DTI ratio. She needs to figure out what will be better financially for her, paying it off, or declaring bankrupcy. What sucks is the will lose the car, and the student loans will stay, so all she would really do is maybe have some if not all of the credit card debt eliminated, and making 50K a year the courts might decide she can pay that off so she might just need to pay it off. If she comes out from under it then her credit will be stellar because they look at these things and in a real loan situation, they know she will dig out no matter how deep they burry her.

I feel like the MISC is acting that this is a rare occurrence but the reality is that likely its very common, especially among middle-class millennials that are trying to live like they are upper class.

It's not even that hard to do, a few trips, shopping and buying designer brands, a few hotels, a bit too much partying, some new apartment furniture, TV, paying the minimum on the card = BOOM $15-20K in debt....

Do you think she will earn more over the next 2-3 years? Does she get a 10-20% raise every year? If so she will likely be able to work her way out in a few years but she definately needs to try to transfer those balances to a 0% APR balance transfer offer and correct her lifestyle or its only going to get worse.

Maybe break-up with her and tell her if she really loves you she will fix the problem and you guys can get back together...

Then its on her. If she wises up, you can take her back. If not, find another chick that has her **** together.

Whatever, just get rid of her. I got my mind blown at the fact that the car my GF has is a 38k one. She got it long before we got together and was able to put 20k down on it (and isnt in a bunch of debt like OPs sloot GF) but still...Ive been on her ass several times about how ridiculous that was. Now she may be selling it to get a cheaper one.

OP you dun goofed if you marry this sloot, and...dont do it.

I know op wont be listening

but she is too far gone. I don't think I know a single person who was this bad with money and suddenly cleaned up their act. The ones I know got far, far worse, endless involuntary credit agreements, bankruptcies, remortgaged houses/equity releases. Nothing to do with not having a good job, everything to do with a lifestyle expectation they cant let go of. Going to be a fun ride, op.
