I don't ever want to drive a "beater" again. I'm going to drive cars that are 4-7 years old for the rest of my life.

You don't need to get to "beater" level to not have a car payment.
I bought my car brand new in 2016 and paid it off in 2 years. It is now 10 years old and in mint condition with only 70,700 km on it. Everything works and I still get compliments on it all the time.
Just had it professionally detailed on Friday. My wife's gift to me for Father's day.

work at a car dealership. I'm in the service dept or "aftersales". I'll just say that finance and sales has it where it seems easier and they convince you better to just trade in but in reality, you are going to pay a lot more. Even if you buy used. It's a big racket but they make a lot of money off of it.
I have a 25yo chevy truck, it's appreciating in value, not depreciating. Paid for, insurance and tax is cheap, cheap to fix, still reliable.
I have a 2022 Sentra, at the time I needed better MPG and was driving a lot of miles. I only got it because of employee pricing, however, still a bit of a mistake. I guess I'll just keep it.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Is it because they salt the roads in winter?
I hear that causes the underbody to rust out so it’s not worth spending anything on a car that gets driven in the winter
I spent a bit of time in VA but it didn’t snow heavily that year
Worst is that the salt corrodes the wheel nuts, was fucking terrible trying to change a tire on the roadside in Moscow

They only had a few heavy snow days a year at my area
I just made extra sure to go to a car wash with the under carriage spray every time late that week to wash it off and my car has very little rust underneath
So it's possible to be ok if you're not in a heavy snow area and take care of it

A beater is a hooptie is a rust bucket is a shit car that most would be embarrassed. The pride is knowing you are financially miles ahead of the typical person that spends out of their means for a nicer car to show off. The millionaire next store who drives a beater gets his satisfaction when people assume he isn't doing well and comment on his car. Its a litmus test for understanding asset vs liability and also how vain you are.
I drove a 2012 VW triple hand me down with 200K miles. It started as a high mileage sedan, but when I was done after 6 years, it was a beater.
Nothing to do with winter driving, that's a local slang. Nation wide beater is just a car that isn't worth anything, but runs, barely.

A beater isn't always a rust bucket POS. Could just be an older car with normal wear and tear for the age but the market value says it's not worth a lot....thus you aren't overly concerned with additional wear/dings/scratches. mechanically runs just fine.

Beaters are not nice cars that grew old
Beaters are not 30k cars and now you make 200k and see a 2020 Camry as a beater
Beaters are cars you see on the street and laugh out loud at the look and sounds. Beaters are cars you wouldn't allow your teen to drive for safety and family perception concerns. Beaters are cars you hide and ask your friend for his whip when your first date asks for a ride. Beaters have multiple colors, physical damage, something is busted features wise (bonus points for AC/heat), no hub caps, a longer than it should be on there doughnut tire, ect. Beaters are what people who hit rock bottom and show up to cousin Eddie's used car lots with 2k cash and ask for whatever runs.

That's extreme.
My wife bought a 2017 Fiat Spider 124 four years ago with 9,000 km on it. Paid cash. It's mint condition. 9 years old now. 30,000 km on it. Perfect little car for her. Never had a payment, not a beater.
There's lots of decent cars out there that won't break your bank account but aren't "beaters".
