I prefer cod to haddock but know plenty of people who prefer haddock or plaice. Cod definitely needs to be fresh though, never trust a chip shop you can't see the sea from. You want that fucker to have been swimming around that morning.

Inland fish and chips are generally dire. I feel sorry for people who go to London, pay twice as much as they should for "British fish and chips" then eat that flavorless, powdery, frozen, trash they serve down there.

You used to have incredible cod stocks but somehow managed to fish them dry with mega trawlers in the 90s so you don't really see much cod in North America now. By you I mean Canadians. It was one of Canada's biggest environmental fuck ups.

Cod must've been cheap AF in your neck of the woods when that was happening though.

my family got rich off the cod industry in the 60s-90s. generational wealth. i rememebr growing up we still did cod in our fish plant but it wasnt nothing like the old days. i use to play as a kid around the cod drying racks we had. the industry is lobster now, some halibut and haddock too. but the industry was the biggest in newfoundland for cod.

my gramp told me the 1970s he was clearing 700k of profit a year. n that was back then, would be like 3m todays money

As far as I'm aware, the catch in the 70s and most of the 80s was sustainable. But for whatever reason Canadian fisheries just went into overdrive in the 90s and absolutely fucked it for a few generations at least. Not even sure the stocks will ever recover, but I'm not an expert there.

One sort of under the radar thing in the UK is langoustine. We fish more than anyone else I think, and they're fucking delicious. Boil them up, shell them, dip those little fuckers in garlic butter. They were relatively cheap when I was a kid too. They're used in traditional scampi as well (shrimp isn't scampi, it's just battered fucking shrimp).

Add scampi to the traditional British food that's good as fuck list.

They already did recover, but people and foreigners want lobster now. the big thing in china especially is atlantic lobster. also glass eels which are like 2500 per KG. so its like the wild west out here people getting shot over fish and lobster mafia wars plants getting burnt down etc. my whole family are somehow involved or indirectly invovled in the fisheries. one of my good friends is a retired fed conservation officer aswell(fish police), he was in his hayday when all this was going down and has tons of crazy stories. fish money will drive people mad, it's like gold.

I had a friend from Maine who told me people who just turn up to fish lobster there get the shit stomped out of them by the locals. Don't go fucking with people's bread and butter I suppose.

He was a weird cunt mind. Might've been bullshitting.

I miss good cod, so it would be nice to have it available. NY's oyster beds are recovering too. They sort of got hammered when the city industrialized, but now it's just posh apartments they're all making a comeback. Nice time to be near the North Atlantic from the sounds of it.
