Servers and bartenders make minimum wage + tips at most restaurants. When you go somewhere to eat, the server is employed by both the restaurant manager and the customers. If you're good at your job, you make more money. This is just like many professions.

Nice generalization, bud. There are lots of people with college degrees doing these jobs. I do both part-time while attending grad school. Dealing with people blows, but it pays the bills. Plus, I'll have a 170k+ job waiting for me in the end.

really don't understand why everyone on the misc hates tipping so much, if the system didn't exist then they would have to raise wages to compensate the employees which would then be reflected in increased prices at the owners discretion, at least with tipping you control how much extra you pay

How hard is this to comprehend? Why does this thread have to pop up every 2 weeks?

Some countries pay service industry workers less than the minimum wage and their wage is supplemented by tips (based on performance)
Other countries pay service industry workers minimum wage or better and they dont expect a tip and some even think its rude

Is that clear? What else is there to debate here?

Standard tip for GOOD service is 20%
Standard tip for service as expected is 15%
Bad Service - depends on how bad - but if its that bad I'll have a word with the wait staff so that they know what to improve for the next customer

When I was 18-21 I concentrated on my craft so that one day I could make money while I sleep.

Yes I dont tip at say McDonalds or Chick Fil A because they are making a minimum wage and the job pays accordingly.
But when I go to a nice restaurant with my wife or a client, I want a profesional serving me, and it takes a lot more than just taking an order and dropping off food. I am willing to pay extra for precision in timing (very important), being attentive to drink levels, wine reccommendations, etc

That type of knowledge deserves more than minimum wage salary.

That's because they get tipped out well above minimum wage 99.9% of the time. They are guaranteed to make minimum wage in the freak occurrence that only the #notipscrew has been dining at their restaurant for that two week period.

Makes me lol when I go to restaurants and the staff want tips on top of their gratuity tip they put on the bill. No thank Jeff

I will tip what I think is worth it, but in UK it is not mandatory anyway

I'm surprised none of you Ameribrahs are asking why are businesses getting away with not paying their staff minimum wage and expecting customers to feed them as well as pay the bill?

Most restaurants fail in business. I don't really know why but i'm guessing they would fail sooner if they had to pay minimum wage.

You pay for your meal = spit and cum in your food
You pay for your meal + 10% = bad, resentful service
You pay for your meal + 15% = adequate service
You pay for your meal + 20% or more = adequate service + a bonus smile

This is what it is like dining out. Basically, you give business to a restaurant only to be threatened by the staff

I HATE when it's mandated.

I don't mind tipping for good service..but what incentive is there to give good service if you're gonna get 18-20% anyways.
