money will be gone, it will be all digital and credits, and that is coming a lot sooner than the robots are. not gonna be pretty.

if things continue tho, I don't see how we avoid a two tier society, those content to do nothing and a subset that keep the system running in exchange for special perks.

Can confirm. Rise of the Robots is also really good. Just finished my dissertation on this a few weeks ago.

People sometimes forget that in addition to procedural/supervised programming, the real problem is machine learning, i.e programming a machine to solve problems by itself, using an extensive library of information, populated by industry experts, journal articles and other publications from any and every year (e.g ***'s Watson)

It's applied everywhere these days! Health care, Finance, Hospitality, you name it. It's more accurate, saves costs, works 24/7, constantly feeding off new industry information. Things aren't looking good for the middle class. It's true that mass (long term) technological unemployment has been disproved by almost any economist: it's usually temporary, causing a drastic shift in skill demand, then returning back to normal in a few years, assuming a relatively stable economy.

But that was in the past, and the technology in the past was nothing compared to what it is now. So to answer your question OP, it likely won't happen in our lifetime, but it isn't science fiction. But as someone here mentioned, a guaranteed basic income will be necessary.

I think we'll have a more egalitarian society; one where robots do all the work and no one will really have to work or perhaps everyone gets the same living wage and we can wile away our time working out and banging each other. If you have a robot that can do anything and everything in society, then you won't have any need to try or make an effort. Everything is done for you. We can just live like a high tech Bonobo monkey and bang our relatives and friends.

Automation replacing a large amount of labor work is a given in the not-so-distant future. Forced wage increases by governments will merely hasten the process, companies will look to automation in order to avoid overpaying workers and that will really get the ball rolling in this realm.

The real question is whether we can develop strong general AI. If that's the case, it's not far-fetched (in fact, it's most likely) to picture a situation in which the vast majority of humans are out of work. If (when) AGIs capable of learning and recursive self improvement exist, there's really no telling where this thing will go. Machines able to improve their own code and develop other better machines at a rate which is inconceivable for human engineers changes the game and has serious implications when it comes to our role in the world.

edit: To answer your question, in the case of AGIs, it'll most likely come down to something along the lines of universal basic income programs. Most people will be unable to actually "earn" much money.

We are not ready for this mentally.

-Racism, wars, and hatred is still very visible in our daily lives
-Greed and power trump exploration and free thinking
-When this issue is brought up people still say "wut about our jerrrrnbzzz"

Not everything will be automated at first. We have many years to go. Even 2050 won't be much different from automation stand point. The general public's understanding/knowledge needs to change.

Just want to toss in that when I was shadowing one of my doctors they told me that the industries heading towards automation and their jobs weren't nearly as secure as they once were.

Highly doubt a robot will be able to perform the duties of accountants for anytime soon srs

If so, I'm already preparing for the shift in the near future

We will end up in a socialist society; robots do the work while humans are paid citizen wage and everyone is basically middle class.

This. We all be long dead before anything interesting happens
You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told you're a god or a total bastard. The iron always kicks you the real deal. It's the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. I have found it to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But 200 pounds is always 200 pounds.

every emerging market would be invented/crushed by AI.

the human brain does NOT develop nearly as fast as Moore's law curve with computer processing power. Computers are a completely different animal, and will leave human intelligence in the dust once it catches momentum un-aided by humans..

The problem is your expecting too much from humans, We can already do all that but instead 90% choose to spend there free time watching movies and worshiping idols like the Kardshians. The more likely scenario will be insane Virtual Reality and most people will just plug into that and explore a virtual world where they are unbound my human limitations/physical fitness/injuries and get on that LDAR lifestyle.
