Tbh Indians only really provide guidance into education typically. I wasn't forced to do any extracurriculars when I was young.

I was super behind on the athletics scene until I started lifting.

Gonna raise my kid that you can make money on your own without school, so he/she can start a business at 15/16 tax free (because kids gonna kids) and be ceo at 18.

Just my opinion, but I find medicine super boring. At this point it's all about the job security.

Yea but then real life hits and I found myself so far behind on the power curve it was about hopeless.

One thing I learned tho is how to be clever, and have recently released a product that should make a lot of money. I would still rather have the tools to have been a Dr. or other professional.

I couldn't live with being in school for 15 years to make what I am already making now. My cousin's husband is a oncologist and makes about $1m a year, but he just started making that kind of money 5 years ago and hes 40.

in israel the raw grade requirements for medicine is so high that 99% of people just go abroad and study there, then comeback with the degree to practice it here. literally like top 0.5% can get in, maybe, and even then they screen half of those by several interviews.

More than half of the doctors here are also arabic/Palestinian, because of positive racial profiling allowing them to get into med school with much lower grade. there's also a big problem with lack of doctors and nurses here and lack of hospital beds(srs), wonder why hehe

I work in healthcare and there are certainly cultures who push/motivate/encourage their children more than other. Where a lot of teenagers are spending their days on social media/playing computer games and getting drunk, certain cultures are investing their time in homework.

I swear in my hospital 75 percent of the doctors aren't of english heritage, because english parents are usually too lazy to push their kids to reach their potential.

I don't feeling sorry for Indian doctors making 100k plus a year, in comparison to english 30 somethings stuck in call centres on minimum wage because they were allowed the freedom to get pissed instead of focusing on school.

I agreed OP. Best friend had a 4.0, 39 on MCAT, volunteered with his mother (who is a doctor), was aprt of like 6-8 honor societies, president of some chit club, and only got accepted to 1 of his 6 medical schools he applied to. Fukkin crazy.

Not that your average doc's salary is chump change. Avg dr's salary of >$200,000 puts you in the top 5th percentile of annual household income.

I'm a medical student...I can say that I have noticed that a lot of medicine is reliant on content. You can't argue against that. If you can memorize large sums of information, in the end you will be ahead of someone who can understand concepts better. Cold hard facts make up a large amount of what we need to know. With that being said, the hard part comes when you have to integrate all those facts amongst several different organ systems, or 3rd or 4th order scenarios. Patients with complex disease states rarely come in with one problem. They have several issues that requires background knowledge in several different organ systems to treat. Any one concept in Medicine isn't truly that difficult. What makes it difficult is having to integrate so many different details in order to solve a problem.

Would never want to be a physician these days. Just not worth it IMO when there are faster ways of earning.

I will breed my kids to go into business though. Top private grade school --> Top university --> Top internships --> Brb IB/PE/Consulting

My daughter starts college this fall (3.94 GPA, lots of AP credits, very high ACT) and wants to enter the NIH Medical Scientist program when she's done (even harder to get into than Med School). Once she graduates HS in a few weeks, she has a summer job lined up in the lab of one of the Medical Scientist's Prof's labs. Need to get started early.

Not denying medicine leads to great lifestyle, and indeed a guaranteed route. But you always hear it from doctors first "Dont go into medicine if money is your priority". That same amount of effort to get into med school and survive residency can be allocated elsewhere, like grabbing a top internship and killing it in the business world.

Although only a small % of people can be a doctor or rockstar associate no matter. But yes I personally know people who graduated (from top schools or in good careers) making six figures at ages 22-25. Most were bankers. Now climbing the ladder and will earn more in their 30s. Best friend is a PharmD at 24 and is mid $150s at age 27, think of the time opportunity of him investing that, and he'll probably come out on par with surgeons once they finally start making money in their 30s. I actually work in healthcare finance myself, and while I dont have a great income yet, I am on my way up there. Entering a top grad program this fall.

I also dont care for blood/guts/helping people so Id never become a doctor regardless.

Medical student here, lol @ this thread. Parents aren't doctors, didn't push me to be a doctor, etc and I'm at a top 20 school right now. I'd say less than a quarter of the students are robots like OP described. Most of my classmates are super cool, interesting people.

You obviously need the scores and GPA to get in but med schools see right through you if you're a robot when you apply. I know plenty of indian kids who didn't get in with great GPAs and MCATs just because they had no personality and did f*ck all interesting stuff.
