Solid statement to make. Even if one lives in the North East and needs 4WD or AWD, the Impreza and the Patriot both come in under $20K brand new before trade-ins and negotiating.

I am not trying to be pretentious. Opie said she is 31 and I am assuming opie is around her age as well. Most people this age do not have 100k+ in non mortgage debt. In fact I don't know anyone who has this much debt that is not tied in with property purchase. She is also only making 50k/yr meaning she is will never escape this debt. It is only going to add on.

Unfortunately, basic financial education is the one thing schools need to teach but don't. It wouldn't even be complicated - you would just need a teacher to tell their kids to stop being retards and buying sht they can't afford. I would imagine it is even worse now with kids running around with iphones and ipads in hand

Good point. $70k on a standard 10 year repayment plan is what ~$800/month, she is making $50k/year, so take home is ~$1,400 going off of single no exemptions paying bi-weekly. So she gets 2 extra paychecks a year but should budget at ~$2,800/month is her total take home. I'd say she put an entire paycheck into those debts, maybe work with the student loan to do income based or extend the loan to help her now so she can knock out the higher APR% debts like that fukkin CC. Would leave her with one paycheck for rent and other bills, $1,400 for all that is very tight...

So ya, she's fukked unless she can extend student loans to pay less, sucks cause she'll pay more in interest but should help her pay off her stupidity. Get the CC paid first, then focus on the car. Then put all she was spending on the car/CC on her student loans. It is possible but it's going to be tough.

If you have 90k in student loan and credit card debt the last thing you need is a new car.

Pretty much. People typically don't change. Especially when they are beyond 30+ years old. Her spending habits will only continue and the burden of her debt will only fall on opie. The responsible thing to do is break up with her because marriage should be out of the question. The only people who will suffer will be opie and his kids if he decides to settle down with someone so irresponsible.

Do not consider marrying her until the credit card debt is gone. She needs to get rid of the car, get something in the 3-4K range, and live poorly. Moving in with family would be a great idea.

19K in debt on CC is unforgivable. That's just bad spending habits, total red flag. She is also 31 which means she will probably never change.

My wife is 25, pays her CC in full every month, has 0 student debt. We bought a house together last summer and she was able to contribute with 20K in down payment. She just bought herself a 28K car and put more than 11K down. We don't share a bank account together as well.

Most people have debt because the system is designed for people to fail and just get by. All my friends have 60-100k in student loans and they know they are enslaved for life. 30yr mortgage is another societal brainwashing. The banks want you to have debt. They want you to be a slave to the lenders. We have an entire generation here who thinks we are supposed to have debt. debt is acceptable. That 70k school debt, is bad debt. That 20k car debt, is bad debt. The 19k cc debt, is godawful debt. She enslaved herself and her goal now is to latch onto a man to come in and rescue her, take care of her. Make all her troubles go away.

Op let me ask you, are you a winner or are you a loser?

Yeah debt like that is a huge red flag for a srs relationship. It's not even the amount so much as the mindset it takes to get into CC debt in the first place.

Lol @ how she buys a 20k car she can't afford when she's up to her eyeballs in credit card debt.

I paid off bout 15k credit debt (was stupid as **** in college with money) but I did it while driving a beater. I make more than she does btw.

Blows my mind she thought it was a good idea to buy a car she obviously cannot afford when she's that far in debt.

She actually lives with her family right now. She helps pay some of the bills which is like $200 a month. She buys anything she wants and she runs tons of marathons which cost like $100 each then flights couple times a year.

At first when I said something about her debt her response was its my money I can do what I want with it. Now if I bring it up she agrees with me that it is awful.

Your very first sentence caused my mindset to immediately turn the rest of your post into a whiny, no knowledge, college brat tone, FYI...

"The system" - you speak as if it is some ominous thing that goes around, kidnaps youngins and throws em into slavery. I agree that a lot of 18 yr olds going off to college do not have a full understanding of the debts they are taking on, is true.

However, the victim mentality of the system fukked me over annoys me. Ya sure, you made a stupid mistake when you where younger, a lot of us do. Figure out how to pay off your mistakes and learn from it. Don't blame "the system" for you voluntarily going to school and spending $70k.

I went to a for-profit tech school that charged the max amount. What did I do? I went to a community college first, knocked out 2 years then transferred into the tech school and finished it off. Only been paying on student loans for 3 years, but it is going down. I wouldn't say my college debt is bad debt. I went from retail making $30k/year to making a chit ton more. My upward mobility is high. So I'd say my college debt isn't bad. But agree if you got 70k loans for underwater basket weaving or some fukkin social degree that doesn't pay chit, then yes. You made a bad investment.

You want a house? You're going to be in debt unless you live with your parents for 10+ years to save up. Good luck renting and saving enough to pay cash for a house. You should be able to buy a house at 60, all the while you spent the last 40 years renting and throwing all that money away.

The thing about debt and borrowing money, is finding out how much you're truly going to pay. If you take a loan out on a car for $20k 0%APR, you're going to pay $20k. If it's 9%APR on a 48 month loan term - you're going to pay an extra ~$4k. On a realistic 3%, same loan/term you pay an extra $1,200. Not bad if you think about 4 years of paying, that's $25/month.

If you can borrow money, not pay much extra and this opens you up to more cash flow for other investments and/or savings then it's an excellent idea. People fuk up when they take out too much debt at too high interest and don't get a good ROI.

OP you realize that's 109k debt?

She makes 50k, after taxes that's around 38k, after spendings, etc. she MIGHT have 10k left if she's REALLY careful.

109k / 10k = she should bedebt free by the time she's 42 years old!

People are literally retarded with money. Sad thing is, even if you doubled her income she would only be twice as much in debt.

She isn't going to make it, srs

The odds of her going from being financially irresponsible to suddenly locking down expenses and paying that off are similar to the odds of me growing to 6'5"

Since you're going to ignore the misc, you'll end up as her debt payment provider. What a life.

Doubtful as cars are depreciating assets. She may get some money back for it, but it won't be the entirety of her loan, unless she owes less than what the car is worth, but referencing her financial history, probably not.
