Possibly less than half. He'd still be on the hook for child support which is one thing - frankly men should contribute to supporting their children. CS alone only becomes truly outrageous at the upper income levels, where the amounts far exceed any realistic need of the child.

The especially devastating part of this is loss of house, belongings, cars, etc. (any "equalization" will of course be determined in her favor) and ongoing alimony potentially for decades.

So anyway, it's agreed upon and gets put in the draft decree in December 2014. Finalizing this stuff takes a while and it wasn't until March that it was finalized. Anyway, it's March 2015 and I got to file my taxes and claim my oldest son which is what the decree said. I'm supposed to get X amount of dollars back and I'm pretty happy with the amount. Couple of days later I get a call that says it's been rejected because she already claimed him BEFORE the decree was finalized. So I got screwed out of almost $2k in tax return last year. I called her up and went off on her but since it was before final decree she wasn't legally wrong to do that. But morally she was since she agreed prior.

Well that's just an example, you get the point. Doesn't happen anymore though since it's been finalized over a year ago.
How did you calculate alimony and child support? Our mediator just pointed us to a ca.gov website that we enter all our information into and it spits out a number. We can ether agree on that number or change it as we see fit. It sounds like whatever we agree is what will be filed and approved by the court.

We agreed that I will claim all of our kids for now because I make so much more and would benefit more from the write offs and then split the return with her and once she starts making more money we can see how we can save the most money through claiming the kids.

I regret nothing. She is still my BFF and I will always love her for giving me my sons. We just can't be together in this capacity anymore.

I am the one that asked for the divorce. Not a sloot, she married her HS sweetheart and was with him for 11 years before he was KIA in iraq. I was her only lover after that. Kind of the same thing bro. State was Wisconsin. So child support is calculated straightforward based on my gross income. Alimony I don't remember exactly but it took into account both our income vs our monthly expenditures. One thing to know is that alimony is tax deductible to you. Whereas child support is not.

Fish, yes I'm in the military. No I don't pay $4k / month. I had to pay a settlement of $20K to buy her out of my assets (houses) and then child support and alimony on top of that. Now I just pay child support. So yeah last year was really bad financially.

How am I coping? I meerly explained how it worked to a guy who asked. I'm fine with being divorced from my ex and am with someone else now. As to the assets, I wouldn't have even bout the houses if I hadn't been married in the first place. I had nothing when we met (in 2002) also, it was all acquired during the marriage. I already explained the financials.

You lose money in a divorce and yes GENERALLY the guy is the one who loses out but not always. I know women who had to pay their ex's in divorce rather than the other way around.

Nobody is saying you need to get married. I've advised many people against it myself, mostly younger guys under 30. That being said, I've had some great experiences through the marriage that I wouldn't have otherwise had.

The divorce sucked financially but could have been worse. I'm not anti-marriage in general though. Mine could have worked out better in the end but what's in the past is in the past. I've started over with someone else over a year and a half ago.
