It's illegal for you to spend that money OP return it to the bank and make sure your account balance is correct (serious) they'll sue you for the difference

It could be recovered only if the teller took in, for example, a $2k check and accidentally deposited it as cash.

The teller may call some of the customers he thinks he could've given extra cash to and ask them to double count it and return it if there's an error. OP is in the clear here but he's scum for keeping the cash. Strong justifications with the bailout money, etc. It's the same thing as stealing IMO.
A flat double like that would be so easy for a bank to find, every move she makes is video recorded they'll find the transaction in question

Lol how can you call him scum for their mistake?

First off the money is from the banks, not some single mother struggling to make ends meet. The same banks that rob most of us from a decent way of life. Not everyone is CEO10k/aday.

And in all seriousness, 2k is chump change to a bank, OP go enjoy your money, it's probably the universes way of giving back for your good karma.

You can try to justify it anyway you like, but you're just making excuses. Have some god damn character and do the right thing.

It is NOT arguable, it's the same situation if someone over deposits into your account spending that money is theft as it's not yours.

If I take someone else's money and hand it to you is the money not stolen? You would be receiving stolen funds and knowingly spending them.

Lol I fuked up badly years ago when I worked as a teller. Guy had like 5 transactions and the last one was a withdrawal. Changed his mind halfway through so in the computer I already put through the 2k amount to his account but on my cash machine I changed it to the new amount he wanted (5k). Was short 3k and was freaking out since I had only been there a month. Assistant manager didn't give a fuk and they found the transaction pretty quickly by matching my withdrawals to the logs on my cash machine. Called the guy and he denied it but we debited him anyways and showed him video proof when he came in a few days later to argue it. He left with the awww fuk bye expression.

Learn how banks work buddy. The money that are in the banks are the peoples money. Banks makes money from interest.

Firstly, they would never be able to track you. You are good to go and spend that money if you want. However, I would return that money ASAP. It is an action of character and skills. Everyone needs money OP not just you. Sooner or later, you are going to feel guilt and its going to make you lose sleep. 2k is a lot but it also isnt. Your conscience and character is worth a lot more. So if you decide to return the money, ask for the manager and tell him the situation.

Depending on the teller's prior over/short record and their policies on large "Outages", he may get fired. He will not have to repay the outage. Not your problem.
Finally somome with a brain, morins ITT jeez I can't believe it. They can not debit your account for speculation Imaigine the law suit that would occur if they were wrong and stole 2k from somone. Yes it is speculation bc even if "the computer tracked it to the exact transaction" the teller put it in an envelope so who knows we're the other 2k went and you can still deny it to no end.

Lol at people thinking the bank is only acting on speculation

You realize they have computer programs keeping track of debits and credits to accounts as well as separate programs keeping track of their cash machine's deposit/withdrawal logs everything time stamped to the second right? Not to mention cameras from multiple angles.

U guys using some sort of Amish bank where everything is tracked in a ledger?

But ya, he's not gonna face jail time. If he doesn't have the extra 2k in his account they'll put it in a negative and block all his accounts until it's brought out of negative.

Eventually it'll go to collections. If it was a couple hundred bucks they'd just write it off and blacklist you but 2k they'd send on collections

Worked briefly as a bank teller (yes Jewish I know)

Is it morally wrong? Probably.
Will the guy get fired? high chances, yes

Will they take it out of OPs account / make him negative? No. It is the tellers responsibility to give the proper amount. Although they could see the 4K being taken on cameras, there is absolutely no way to prove that there was 4K in the envelope when it was handed to OP, because the teller didn't take the money and count it in front of him.

If they did try taking it out / making negative account, they'd be liable for a big lawsuit. There would be no proof that he actually received any additional money.

lol at these sjw's trying to scare you into bringing the money back. There is no way for them to prove that the missing 2k was given to you. They can speculate on the time the money was lost, the missing amount totaling the amount you took out etc. but the bottom line is they cant know for sure unless the investigator himself sees you take 4k out of that envelope.

And to the idiots saying help the teller keep his job, how incompetent can you be to miscount an extra 2000 dollars? I guess no one should be held accountable for their jobs anymore. he deserves whatever the banks punishment is.

**** morals. taking 2k from a bank isnt the same as taking 2k from a disabled veteran, chit is literally a drop in the bucket for them.

Not every bank uses cash recycling machines. Even if the bank in question did, the security cameras are not 4k HD with every imaginable angle to verify that the teller put exactly $4000 in that envelope. Have you ever seen a bank robbery video in your life? They can barely get a good image of the suspect, let alone verifiable pictures of currency with their denominations.

The teller manager will have the drawer recounted, the debits/credits re-balanced, all to confirm that the teller screwed up. Call the customer and hope that they are honest. If not, tough luck.

The banks I've worked with are all publicly traded on NYSE. Not "amish" lol.

Yes. Unless "Destiny" was the name of the teller who handed OP the extra $2k.

The other things you mentioned like winning the lottery or meeting the love of your life at a park are luck or coincidences. This situation is neither of those things, just a careless error on the part of a bank employee.

Also, someone's job is potentially at risk. I know you'll probably argue perhaps the teller is bad at their job and deserves to get fired, but this situation is easily rectifiable.

I don't understand how this happens, but I'm not calling OP a liar. This happened to one of my best friends, although it wasn't nearly that amount of money. He tried to withdraw like $300 or so, and there ended up being an extra $100 in their somehow. This was like 5 years ago though so I don't remember all the details.

I'd give it back. Realistically, you probably won't get caught, but that's a possibility I wouldn't want to think about. Regardless though, out of just moral principal, I wouldn't take 2k (or any amount of money) that's not mine from anyone (regardless on your opinion of the company). Lastly, you returning the money could be the difference from someone being fired and someone just getting yelled at for being a dumbass.

I worked in bum fuk nowhere in Canada where all our stuff was second hand from American banks when they upgraded. The cameras aren't 4k but they can still show the transfer from the machine to the envelope. If he didn't have a machine and was taking cash from a drawer without counting then I don't even know what to say about that

This never in a million years would they just take the cash from your account. If they ever did somehow track it back to you *which is improbable* they would just call you or send you a letter asking about it and ask you to return it if not then they MAY take it further.
