They attacked us.

Millions of Americans would have died during a Japanese ground invasion.

Both my grandparents were Army in 1945.

Myself and many others on the Misc probably wouldn't be here if the nuke wasn't dropped.

Fuk you OP.

Emperor Hirohito was treated as a celebrity worldwide until his death, I believe. Shiro Ishii got off so ****ing easy....
Arrested by the US occupation authorities at the end of World War II, Ishii and other Unit 731 leaders were to be thoroughly interrogated by the Soviet authorities.[9] Instead Ishii and his team managed to negotiate and receive immunity in 1946 from war-crimes prosecution before the Tokyo tribunal in exchange for their full disclosure of germ warfare data based on human experimentation. Although the Soviet authorities wished the prosecutions to take place, the United States objected after the reports of the investigating US microbiologists. Among these was Dr. Edwin Hill (Chief of Fort Detrick), whose report stated that the information was "absolutely invaluable", it "could never have been obtained in the United States because of scruples attached to experiments on humans", and "the information was obtained fairly cheaply".[9] On 6 May 1947, Douglas MacArthur wrote to Washington that "additional data, possibly some statements from Ishii probably can be obtained by informing Japanese involved that information will be retained in intelligence channels and will not be employed as 'War Crimes' evidence."[10] The deal was concluded in 1948.[citation needed] In this way Ishii was never prosecuted for any war crimes.

Richard Drayton, a Cambridge University history lecturer, claimed that Ishii later went to Maryland to advise on bioweapons.[11] If Ishii did travel to Maryland, it was most likely to advise at Fort Detrick, a well known major biomedical experimentation facility in Frederick, Maryland.[citation needed] Another source says he stayed in Japan, where he opened a clinic where he did examinations and treatments for free.[12] Ishii was especially concerned with the health of children.[citation needed] He kept a diary but it did not reference any of his wartime activity.[13] He died of throat cancer at the age of 67,[14] having, according to his daughter, converted to Catholicism[15] on his death bed.
Hell, some American generals and higher ups should've been put on trial for allowing this **** to happen.

if anything, the US could have had a show of force and dropped the bombs in a less densely populated area to show they had the power to wipe them off the face of the earth or in the outskirts of a city.
You do realize 50 million people (mostly civilians) died in WW2 right? 240k is jack chit compared to the total and more relevantly, jack chit compared to the planned mainland invasion of Japan. Like multiple people ITT have mentioned, we are still using purple hearts that were made for that single invasion, haven't had to make any since...thats how bad our military was expecting it to be.

It would've been millions dead on Japan's side alone, mostly civilians. Oh and also mentioned is how Japan was refusing the US's surrenders because it was dealing with the Soviets on the side trying to use them to get a better surrender deal, one that would leave the Imperial system intact and if that happened we'd be dealing with them again a decade or two later.

Dropping the bombs on the outskirts of small cities or something similar is like giving an attacker a flesh wound instead of shooting him center mass until he drops.

This thread is a clusterfuk of misinformation.

OP: Stop watching documentaries and read some books.

Read this for the against view:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...shima-nagasaki
This for the For view:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1960034.Retribution

And come to your own conclusion.

Reading the Max Hasting's one at the moment and it's good (though it's not all aout the atomic bombs). It's a bit skewed to the right but you need to read both sides to get the best answer/

No regrets on either bomb and wouldn't have had any for the 3rd one that would have hit Tokyo. They were given days to surrender and chose not to before and after bomb 1.

They are lucky they didn't let it get to bomb 3.

History is always written by the victors.

In this thread we have Americans arguing for the nuclear bombing of Japan. Look up any article about the bombing of Dresden and you'll find hundreds of Brits arguing that it was justified in the comments section.

Yeah you're right, but not a lot of soldiers died in the nukes man. More than 250,000 civilians died.
Should have nuked a less populated city if they wanted to showcase the nukes or a navy base.

Firstly, Japan didnt attack America unexpectedly.

Like in WW1, and WW2, America was not part of the war and no country wanted to fight them, in particular Germany, and Japan.

America was happily funding both wars and selling the arms. Basically drug dealers and loan sharks all in one. Same idea, never try your own product.

They joined both wars for other reasons. WW1 was because of other "interests" (balfour declaration). WW2, The Japanese were busy attacking asian countries for land (Korea, China, etc). When Japan attacked the Philippines(lil buddy friends), America stepped in and basically put a choke hold on Japan (blockades, restrictions etc) and Japan was going down for the count without a ref, so Japan threw a punch knowing Germany was ready for the tag.

America stepped in to a fight they were not a part of, so i wouldnt call Pearl harbor, however evil it was, a sucker punch. It was a very very ignorant and expensive mistake to not expect any sort of repercussions from the blockades and restrictions on Japan at that time and age.

Japan needed resources to secure all its offensives in the area, and without oil and metals, they would lose everything they did for the last several years.

Japan deserved to have its chit pushed in for all its evil in the Asian region and im personally thankful to America, but Japan didnt start the war with America, America butted in where it wasnt welcome. America has been a bully since it became a power. Even today in Vietnam, middle east, Israel etc.

Winning WW2 is a pretty damn good justification.

If Japan didn't wank nukes dropped on them, then they shouldn't have tried to take over the eastern world and slaughter9 millionChinese civilians.

This whole concept of "let's shelter civilians" was born after WW2. For all of human history, the whole point of war was to slaughter, rape and enslave civilians. One group would wage war on another group for the sole purpose of killing all of the boys and men and then raping all of the girls and women.

It hastened the end of the war, likely saved Japanese lives and absolutely definitely saved American lives. So yeah, fukked up no doubt but given the previous plan involved burning every Japanese city to the ground with firebombs and high explosives and then fighting for every inch of land against dug-in, fanatical opposition - it made a lot of sense to go nuclear. Go read a history of the Pacific war and scale up some of those battles to Home Islands size, you can see why no-one was keen to put another 250K+ US soldiers in the morgue.

Also: don't start some if you don't want none.

There's honestly no bigger cope on this earth than how people try to rationalise these nukes. If one innocent American is killed by ISIS there's people literally crying on TV and demanding revenge. But 200,000 innocent Japanese murdered and decades of birth defects and radiation poisoning and it's all, "well their nation became economically successful afterwards so maybe these nukes were just the leg-up they needed!"

I guess I have to spell it out for you because your reading comprehension is so bad. I was replying to a post regarding "training children to take up arms for their emperor". It was meant as a humorous comparison to the impending Trump American Empire. You defend to the death your firearms training for children, but defend the mass killing of Japanese children with WMD because they were learning to respect and use spears safely? Just lol at still not getting the point.

Meanwhile ITT I got negged and "sore loser"/nazi by hurr durr 'merricans with poor reading and comprehension skills. Not surprising given your acceptance of the most basic textbook explanations of why the USA dropped the bombs. USA, the first country to manufacture nuclear weapons, and the only country to have used them in combat.

For the record I didn't loose chit in WWII. My countrymen, on the other hand, were the only forces to capture all objectives on D-Day.

I kind of feel like this is a relevant time to post this video...it is long, but honestly worth the watch especially on memorial day. This video kind of spans across lines..we're US citizens here mostly and use today to commemorate, but it's worth noting all those who died because their country asked them.

It is a surprising quick 18minutes, and should leave a bigger lasting impact due to the visual representation of the death count.
