So a building in NYC is collapsing from the inside...

pretty interesting. had to google how to even fix such a dangerous issue. makes me wonder which is more dangerous this or a deep-sea repair?

asked AI:

Emergency engineering crews cannot safely repair this building from the inside right away, as the 37-story skyscraper on East 42nd Street has been completely evacuated due to an immediate risk of collapse.

Because the 21st through 26th floors are already caving in under the stress of two buckled support beams, structural engineers must follow a strict, highly controlled emergency stabilization protocol before any permanent repairs can begin:

1. Exterior Stabilizing and ShoringEstablish a collapse zone: First responders have closed East 42nd Street between Second and Third avenues to keep all personnel clear of the exterior footprint.Remote structural monitoring: Engineers deploy high-precision laser retroreflectors and electronic tiltmeters on the building’s exterior façade to track real-time shifting or tilting without putting lives at risk.

External structural bracing: If interior access remains too lethal, heavy crane crews may be forced to anchor external truss bracing or temporary steel exoskeletons to the outside of the 21st and 22nd floors to arrest the downward sink.

2. Remote Technical AssessmentDeploy robotic drones: The FDNY "major technical rescue response" teams utilize specialized tactical drones equipped with LiDAR and thermal imaging.Map the internal cave-in: Drones fly through broken windows on the 21st through 26th floors to map the exact geometry of the crumbling concrete and warped silver beams.

Calculate load redistribution: Forensic structural engineers feed the drone data into 3D structural modeling software to determine if the building's remaining core columns can handle the modified weight distribution.

3. Controlled High-Risk Entry and JackingPhased tactical shoring: Once the building's movement is deemed temporarily halted, specialized technical rescue teams will enter lower, stable floors directly beneath the damage.

Advance heavy hydraulic jacks: Workers will incrementally build temporary heavy-duty steel shoring towers up from the stable lower levels to meet the buckled 21st floor.Relieve the buckling stress: High-capacity, computer-controlled hydraulic jacks will gently lift the upper caving floors by mere fractions of an inch to stop the progressive collapse.

4. Reinforcement and "Sistering" the FrameExpose structural steel: Once stabilized, crews will clear out the ongoing luxury apartment conversion debris to completely bare the compromised core frame.Weld massive sister plates: Certified structural welders will sandwich the two buckled support beams between thick, heavy-duty steel plates (often called fishplates).

Re-pour floor diaphragms: Crumbling concrete floor slabs between the 21st and 26th floors will be systematically broken down, cleared, tied with new rebar steel, and re-poured to restore lateral stability.

Somebody did something they shouldnt have ,obviously

Since its an active job and beams don't just buckle

That company is fkd

Those floors need to be gutted to be repoured

Fk thats alot of work

Laborers gonna be smiling

Personally, its not that bad or windows would be breaking ,they have slide clips that allow for expansion

And multiple beams spread the load ,all of them would have to fail

My guess is its centralized and not in danger of collapse

The news are just clueless

Remember when they jacked up the Palace Theater in Times Square for renovation? They jacked it up like 30 feet.

Site Location: 235 E. 42nd Street, New York, NY (formerly the Pfizer headquarters).

General Contractor: 235 GC LLC (Robert Travis).

Developers: David Werner Real Estate Investments and Metro Loft Management.

Project Scope: Gut renovation of a 33-story commercial office building to convert it into a 1,500-unit luxury residential complex.

Structural Failure: Beams and columns on the 21st through 26th floors began to buckle, causing sagging and caving.

Prior Safety Issues: Records show the site has prior Department of Buildings (DOB) violations, including failing to report a prior incident, non-adherence to construction plans, and a 2025 citation for falling debris

Yeah they got in the basement and used hydraulic jacks to lift the whole building. It was very impressive.

But this just came in my IG feed, and the Pfizer building is a bit more of an emergency, it was collapsing today.

No, but you can acquire a massive insurance policy that has a specific line referencing plane collisions. Then you can be absent for work the day that, well uh, you know.

INB4 it collapses 1 second short of free fall speed
INB4 it collapses and the debris is shipped off to a Chinese junk yard before metallurgic analysis is done
INB4 it collapses, a piece of debris hits a near by building, causes fires and leads to that buildings collapse inside 6 hours
INB4 fire fighters are on the radio yelling "pull it" seconds before collapse
INB4 fire fighters give live eye witness accounts about multiple series of explosions seconds before collapse
INB4 yeah I think you get it
