Why are people so obsessed with Pokemon?

A few years ago they had that app where people can search for Pokémon irl and people were going crazy over that.

And now people are obsessed with Pokemon cards paying 500K for some cards.

What is so good about Pokemon and why are people so obsessed with it?

Pokémon was made in the 90's and people are as obsessed about it now as ever before.

I don't consider that a fad.

Yeah Pokémon is one of those things I dont see the hype about. I think its a secondary addiction, with the primary being social media. These "influencers" need to consume in order to keep their numbers up. I see the hype about pack/pulls and rare cards, when was the last time you heard someone talk about the show or playing the game?

PokemonGo was mostly nostalgia, paired with it coming out during the Summer and encouraging people to go outside, it was like crack for families with children

The card trading has always been around, but its recent amplification can be seen as more of a recession indicator imo
Have fun and be yourself :-)

The people fighting over cards in stores are just resellers trying to profit off of it. I hope people aren't paying much over retail, that would be super lame. Even paying retail is still lame because it's just pieces of cardstock

Its a perfect storm.

-nostalgia as the Pokemon kids have turned 30-40 and have real money now to buy into the next phase
-the broke version of that same demo graphic see's their card collection as a pay day
-kids now see it as retro and probably less mainstream than whatever is out now (like a 10 year old who likes led zeppelin)
-those same kids have dads that know all about it and encourage it at a higher rate than our unaware parents did
-lower class Hispanic males think waiting at a vending machine all day is a better "job" than Uber eats
-sad, undeveloped nerds use it as a way to hold onto their childhood when things were simpler and they weren't a loser yet

Here's the painful one, many of those kids from 1999 never grew up. They moved from Pokemon to yugio to Xbox and never progressed past a gaming lifestyle. Now their dusty card collection is actually worth something and they feel like they have regained power. In reality they are still losers, but have a couple thousand in cards, big whoop.

I'm know one friend who is selling every card he has, $1 or $1000, its getting shipped. Other friend is holding because it gets better every month! I told him sell it all and buy VOO and he looked at me like I had 3 heads LMAO.

Can confirm, bought bunch of graded cards like 3 years ago for my kids/nostalgia and most of them have x3 or even some x10 what I paid for them.

I send my wife to sams club to buy the 2 boxes you can as they are worth double if not triple right away.

Plan on selling all of it this year though as I'll take my gains and just invest it for them

I once had a whole bucket of 1999 Pokémon trading cards that I had, that I threw in the trash during the middle of my senior year in 2012.

I somewhat regret doing that but, senioritis really kicked in 2012 that I wasn't thinking straight, and I lost potentially a good couple of thousands of dollars from it.

It really changed back in 2012. I wished I knew you guys prior 2014.

The games are fun and collecting the cards can be cool. I agree there's no reason to be spending hundreds of thousands on cards though and making a clown of yourself in public "catching Pokemon" in some mobile game.

That's actually reasonable but that's pennies compared to what I was talking about. No one should ever be spending 100k+ on a card.

The last season of the show (that aired in 2023) with getting rid of Ash and Team Rocket was a terrible closing note for them. They replaced Ash with a nothingburger of a girl lead. And she's horrible.

As for the games, they remove things like how you can't get all 900 Pokémon in Sword/Shield and you can catch only about 450 of them in the whole game, without the aid of cheating/hacking.

So, the focus of "Gotta catch 'em all" wasn't possible in Sword/Shield.

There's a new game called "Winds & Waves" that's coming out next year but, I am not the last bit excited about it.
