You might not agree but people need to be controlled through the implication of violence

Society wouldn't function with absolute, unchecked freedom

Or even the idea that the masses would somehow self-regulate themselves

People would take advantage of it and society would descend into chaos

You give them just enough rights, or the illusion of rights, to placate them

With the mutual understanding that if they cross a certain line then those rights will be taken away, including with violence if need be

You give them so-called freedom of speech to make them feel as if they have a say in the matter, but knowing whatever they blab on about won't really change anything

You give them the right to protest, as long as they get a permit to do it and it stays peaceful

You even give them the right to bear arms to make them believe they have some power, knowing very well there's guys on the other side with bigger guns who will put them in their place if they actually act up

i had this revelation while deadlifting yesterday. This threat of violence can be most effective if it is eternal
