I got finished cutting the grass on a riding mower on a 4 acre yard.

I was doing the weed eating.

was nearing finishing weed eating the yard and was at back by the tin roof shelters we have ...

wraaaaaaah wraaaaaaaah [weed eater sound] woomp woomp ..... :wait what's that!?:


:look down: Oh **** a baby rabbit is crawling across the ground, injured badly.

What's that? Oh **** what have I done? I hit a baby rabbit with the weed eater in the grass. To spare you all the gory details, it screwed him up very badly so he was gone.



To make a long story short, the weed eater did damage to one of them that I had to put him down. It messed him up very bad but he was still crawling so I did what I had to to unfortunately. This bothered me more than I care to share.

There was 5 total. That 1 is dead. 2 scurried up out of the hole and off in different directions and hid, and I caught two.


These are the two I caught.




I put them in a cardboard box very near to where they were, but where momma rabbit could still get to them if she tried.





this is the hole that they were in. It was originally covered in grass and rabbit hair.



That was 9 hours ago. Momma rabbit has not come back yet. We've seen her in the back yard many times before, but not tonight.


What should I do misc?

It's still bothering me how badly he looked and how I had to put him down.

He was ripped apart badly in several places including his face, neck and side ribs but was still kicking and I used a bucket of water to put him down in.

It went quickly. It was the only humane thing to do.

I care about the surviving rabbits.

What should I do? Should I just let them go and hope momma rabbit finds them, or should I keep them pinned up and feed them myself until they are old enough to survive on their own?

Our back shelters are 500 feet from the house. Water and a bucket was right there. I didn't even have a knife on me like I normally do. There wasn't even a shovel around like we often have down there. It was either water and a bucket, or smash his head in with something, or spend 20 minutes up to the house trying to get a gun going and hope I could still find him when I get back. He was still kicking and trying to run around with his face torn off and on the back of his ****ing neck.

You do realize that once any living thing loses certain amount of blood, he can't really feel the pain anymore because brain shuts down. It wouldn't really matter how he killed him because signal that tells you "your body is in pain" were long gone by the time OP drowned it. Rabbit felt nothing.

op grate some veggies or whatever rabbits eat, put a small plate of water near the hole and put the rabbits on a blanket and leave them near the hole, and leave the area and hopefully the mother will come back or out of the warren. then again i dont know anything so dont listen to me.

the mother rabbit is a rabbit and does not have the critical thinking skills to realise they are in a box
