Not at all. I can remember when AV systems were like furniture. They had polished wood sides and black lacquer so that it was almost a shamed to hide them.

Then of course there was the unobtrusive remote types were everything was integrated into the walls and you just heard the sound but never saw any of the speaker/components.

I'm more of the latter, but I understand the need of aesthetics.

hey guys! been lurking around but i'm still a noob. my current pc is sort of dying, malfunctioning as of late. i'm planning to upgrade it part by part since i'm still a student.

i'm venturing into video and photo editing after my exams in may (extreme amateur), i like to game (would like to play battlefield 1 and the latest games on pretty high settings).
i'm not planning to overclock since i'm not any expert like you guys.

current set up:
i5-4570
MSI B85M-G43
AMD Radeon R9 200 series
CoolerMaster 750w
Monitor HPw2228h

I'm not very worried about budget yet but more ofprioritizing what to upgrade first. I would be inclined to believe that my CPU is stillusable.
My motherboard or psu has been giving me problems. Whenever i fully shut down my computer, i will be unable to turn it on. The PSU fan will spin, i will hear a tick like when my computer is starting up and then it auto shuts down after a few seconds. I had to try for umpteen times then it finally just work. This all happened one day after the power in my house tripped and my com got shut down. I'm not sure how to test if my motherboard or psu is the one that's fking up.
On some days I managed to go into BIOS setting but whenever i try to save changes, my com will hang. So what i've been doing now is that my com is never off, but when I put it to sleep, it can resume back perfectly. I'm thinking that my MOBO is the one that's fking up.

Any thoughts?

Just get a i7-4790k since you are already on a lga1150 socket. So you don't need to get a new motherboard or ram too. Then replace the power supply since it sounds like it is on its last legs. Go into your bios and reset it to factory default. Then see if your motherboard still gives you problems. Whatever you have left use for a video card and monitor.

just get a better gpu. 1070 or above imo. also with that get a new monitor, depending on your gpu choice.

1070 - 1080p144hz
1080 - 1440p 144hz
1080ti - 4k or 3k ultrawide

at least thats how i would do it. your cpu/mobo/psu should be fine for a few more years at least, i'm still on a 3570k. get at least 16gb of ram.

also tbh i'm not sure how well a 1070 does 1440p144hz, it may be enough for it. i feel like if you aren't on a strict budget you should leave 1080p behind unless you really want the most fps for fast paced cs go and stuff

but ideally a new gpu + monitor should make it seem like a whole new gaming experience for you.

Good news, a dedicated gaming rig can also double as a great editing machine. The only difference is when you venture into extreme editing (broadcast quality) where you'd need that dedicated -- and very expensive pro graphics card.

Other than that, you should be good to go on both fronts with a mid to high end gaming gpu.

got a 1080 ti FE

won't work on my korean 1440p because adapter it came with doesn't work (**** you nvidia) and to buy one is like $100+ and even then there's no guarantee it'll work

ordered an Acer predator (4k ips gsync)

plugged up my Samsung 65" QLED 4k tv up to the computer and came buckets

not sure if I should return monitor or not and use TV until QLED monitors are released. IPS looks so washed out after seeing QLED (like how TN panels looked compared to IPS)

biggest downside of hooking it up to my TV is that can't use my desk to put my kb/mouse on

wat do

My GTX 970 has been having occasional framerate issues during action in Mass Effect Andromeda on Ultra.

But I'm like "I didn't build a PC to play chit on High".

At 1440p you are going to need at least a 1070 to run new games.

I bought that 970 on it's release week back when I was still in college. I'll most likely build a high-end rig at the end of this year. It's gonna be sexy, believe me.

As others have said above me: 970 is far from poverty, but it just doesn't quite cut it for 1440p ultra gaming for 2017 titles.

I just sold my 970 for 190$ on ebay. Picked up a brand new 1080 from Ebay for 420$.

Now I can comfortably play 144hz 1440p.

Just sold my R9 290 for $160 on Craigslist, lot easier\less risky to scammers than ebay imo. Took longer but w\e that's fine. Also picked up a 1070 lol. Feels good when you can sell your old parts to get a big discount on the new stuff.

i would presume that prices for the 1070 would drop further right? decided that i want to upgrade my gpu to a msi 1070 8gb but as of now it is out of my budget. giving myself some time to save up.

currently with a r9 280x, if let's say i upgrade my monitor to a nice 27" 1440p. my current gpu would not be able to maximise the monitor's potential right? or it only applies for the high demanding games and applications. if i'm watching normal 1080p shows and browsing the net / dota 2 would there be any issues?

contemplating if i should upgrade my gpu or monitor first.

That gpu will work fine.
I used it with my triple monitor setup. One 32" 2560x1440 monitor and gaming on a 24" 144Hz 1920x1080 monitor.

The world would be a better place if everyone would channel their frustration and anger to better themselves and be nicer to everyone they meet. Everyone has their own fights and stories to tell, you are not more important than another.

I had them from my previous build and brought them forward as 1 TB SSDs are not cheap

will look into nvme next and maybe get rid of the 2 TB mechanical drive but not going to bother with a NAS, I like my reads/writes to be fast

Just got rid of my Corsair 540 case and rebuilt in a Fractal Define C, man this case is so small but fits everything so easily, I love it.

Dat GPU sag, also not sure what fans to put in yet so didn't change the default Fractal ones.
