for me it was easier to get the 3000 series cards but that was because of Evgas system where you get in line and when its your turn you have a full day to purchase. no chasing or spamming f5.
it was super nice


but putting mining completely aside. the 3xxx cards were always going to be hard to get. the 1xxx cards where hugely popular and the 20 series didnt provide much in the way of raster gains + high prices so most people skipped.
when the 3080 came it there was a big enough jump in performance and time to upgrade again... plus it seemed so much cheaper compared to 2080ti with the launch price of $699 so everyone was trying to get one at msrp... and the rest of the stack falling in line with decent pricing

im actually surprised with the demand of the 4090. at $1599 minimum plus tax nvidia has far surpassed 100k units a month ago. very popular card but honestly with it being like 80% faster than the 3090 its like 2 full generations of performance increases so i can understand why

It's easy to get a 4080, my Microcenter has them right now and have had them for a bit now.

4090s on the other hand are a pain to find at MSRP.

what a huge flop for the 7900xtx. just finished watching some reviews

Jays2cents actually show that it's slower than the 4080 on average. Linus specified driver issues and weird bugs.. as well a poor power management. additionally higher temperatures than the 4080 and uncomfortable room heat

Hardware unboxed noticed huge power draw, considerably more than the 4080.

at $1000, this is a huge flop. If you are gona spend into this price class it better have all the bells and whistles

48" LG c1 as well

My 3080 12gb cannot run games at 120fps 4k unless I use DLSS balanced/performance and lower settings

Forget about Ray tracing unless I lock down to 60fps

Competitive games like Warzone runs like butter though on 4k

I watched those videos too and it seems like your take goes against the majority of their conclusions.

Slightly better in Raster than 4080. RT performance between 3090 and 3090ti and ~20ish percent worse than 4080 in RT.

My Take:
7900xtx -> should have kept the "XT" and $1000 is fair, but I wouldn't spend much more on a partner model.
7900xt -> should have been 7800xt for $750-800
This would allow for a 7700xt with around 3090 performance for $600

Being cheaper than a bad priced card doesn’t make it good,
Just not as poorly priced. Overall it seems like 200 cheaper is needed just for parity with the 4080 when you consider feature set, software, bugs, raytracing/Dlss
That’s at the same performance

The mood is bad tho look at the comments in those reviews
Maybe people would be higher on this card if AMD didn’t intentionally mislead everyone with “50-70%” claims when in reality it’s only 35% faster than the 6950

I don’t think either of the cards are priced where they should be

"that much" is all relative. when I built my first PC in college, the entire thing cost less than my 4090 - and I was running 4k resolution back then (6+ years ago)

now that I have a real job, $1600 is pretty cheap especially compared to other hobbies like cars, travel, photography, etc.

The 7900xtx seems to scale pretty linearly in frames per dollar at current market prices. Not great not terrible. The 7900xt on the other hand looks pretty bad.

Launch day drivers are never perfect with either company. Plenty of early issues with the 4000 series too. These are not reported as major nor wide spread. Since about Q1 2021 AMDs driver package has been very comparable to NVIDIA with more or less the same gaming experience.

So now we are left to decided how much:
1. RT is worth
2. DLSS being slightly better than FSR
3. How each perform in work specific tasks.
4. AMD being better in Linux.

RT is largely dependent on price tier. I would argue RT below a 3080 is virtually worthless. However, if you are spending $1000+ on a card it may be worth something to you.
DLSS is slightly better than FSR, but the latest version seems very comparable.
Certain tasks want CUDA cores. IF your work needs it. You better be getting NVIDIA.
Then again if you have a linux computer for some reason you should favor AMD.

I don't think NVIDIA's better feature set is worth 20% though if you do production it might be for you.

For me to upgrade from my 3070 I need 3090 performance at $500.

Just bought all the parts for a new PC build boyos. Haven't done one since 2013 so I am stoked about the massive leap in performance i am about to get.

I've still got the 1080 monitor for now, but my next step will be a 1440 (4k maybe?) 144+hz monitor and a beefier graphics cars when they come down a bit in price. I spent a decent chunk, but went small on a graphics card (clear gaming bottleneck) as i know i am going to go big on one in the future.

Ultrawide is goat. If I was shopping for a new monitor I'd be looking/waiting for the newer ultrawide oled monitors to start popping up and going on sale. There's a few out already, I think Alienware has a 34" ultrawide oled for $1200ish.

Depending on your budget there's quite a few new sweet ass monitors out these days. Start watching YouTube reviews srs

Either you like ultrawide or you don't (with 1440px height).
I don't personally like it, I find their physical height ridiculous.

I prefer the physical area of monitors with 2560x1440 resolution, both 27 and 32 inches.
If I were to consider a ultrawide monitor it would need to have 1600px height atleast.
That's unfortunate given the two (3 if you count the new version of the Alienware 34" OLED) ultrawide OLEDs released so far. LG 27" 1440p OLED 240 Hz on the horizon (to be released this month).
Currently rocking a 1080p 360Hz monitor for my CSGO needs. Also got a few monitors I use for work with 2560x1440, one of them a 32" 165Hz Dell. The 2560x1440 165Hz monitors are a dime a dozen and you can pick them up for 200-300 bucks.

Congrats on the new setup! I've tried a lot of the "best" monitors out there, at least the large ones anyways.

The smallest setup I could ever go back to would be 3 27" monitors. otherwise I prefer 34", 40", 49", etc.

For FPS gaming, 32:9 aspect ratio ultrawide is a must for me now. For MMORPG or solo type stuff, I'd probably go 40-50" OLED

Meh, not unless you are having issues or run a ton of chit. Or if you just wanna drop some money for no serious gains then go for it lol. to be fair in the future I will always put at least 32gb on mine, but I do some photoshop work.


Side note. This is probably the best desk accessory I've gotten ever. Love this thing. Comes in a two pack also.

Doesn't really matter for gaming tbh. I don't think I've ever used more than 15gb doing anything, and that's counting windows using up 7gb to launch programs faster.

My only guess is they're using RAM in place of streaming from the SSD.

agree with others. I have 64GB of ram and the only time it gets remotely close is editing 45MP pics or 4k/8k video

gaming is probably still plenty fine on 16GB

There are very few games that require over 16 gb.

If you are playing those types of games. Yes, otherwise you will see no improvement.

Not a PC gamer, but I decided to upgrade my old 2011 PC build (well, more like build a completely new rig).

Decided to just go with AM4 (the deals were too good) instead of future proofing it. I also went mini-ITX instead because I don't want a giant rectangular box that looks like every other custom PC.
