Discuss: The Basic Laws Of Human Stupidity

"Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it." -- Mark Twain

Five Laws Of Human Stupidity

1] Everyone underestimates the number of stupid people.

You overestimate the number of intelligent people based on superficial criteria like job, education, class, race, eloquence, etc.

2] The probability that a person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic.

You will find a roughly equal percentage of stupid people in any group.

3] A stupid person causes losses to others without gains to themselves. [social theory of stupidity] They are messing things for everyone else without any clear gain, or are actively harming themselves while messing things up for others. These are people who are consistently stupid; not randomly or rarely.

4] Non-stupid people underestimate the danger of stupid people.

5] Stupid people are the most dangerous people on the planet.*

* Stupid people are more dangerous than bandits because bandits are predictable as they are following incentives/have goals.
You shouldn't assume that people who are highly educated aren't stupid, nor that ignorant people are stupid.

Ignorant people can be educated. Stupid people can know all the facts and still act stupidly.

Stupid people are always there; they aren't what determines societies collapsing.

What is important is maintaining a higher number of intelligent ethical people vs. "bandits" [unethical intelligent people].

1.) after the sh!tshow that was Covid I certainly don’t underestimate the number of stupid people

2.) I think this is a good one consistently remind yourself of in order to avoid falling into groupthink

3.) seems obvious

4.) probably a good point, because the harms of stupid people usually aren’t easily measured…or seem to be contained to a small area around the stupid person.

5.) not sure I agree with that. I mean, if the brilliant people leading society didn’t funnel the stupid people a certain way we would be much better off. So who is more dangerous, the stupid person or the genius directing a million stupid people to harmful actions?

Seems to conflate stupidity with irrationality which, while often overlapping, are 2 different things

Eg stupid people often align to one political party over another thinking that if their team wins, their life will somehow change for the better

They are acting in their own self interest, but just misguided

Average IQ in human beings is terribly low for advanced species standards. Honestly just the last couple of years i realized how stupid the average person is, and how terrifying and problematic that is.

It’s a bitter sweet pill to swallow, in one hand you can excel and stand out from others much easier if you have some good level of IQ and EQ. On the other hand most things are out of your control since we live in a society and the herd mentality is something that can really mess up your life.
"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Absolutely all of this, but it still aggravates me that so many people are so happy to be willfully ignorant. "I don't understand it, so it's fake."

There’s really only 1 law

1. All of you are stupid until proven otherwise.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Highly relevant. Our current "elites" are turning their own children into trannies in an effort to virtue signal. We are most certainly ruled by true imbeciles.

It’s ridiculous, you can find a high % of stupid people in every area or field. Medical, engineering, therapeutic, government, etc, you name it.

Best filter of smart people I can think of right now is the good old “you think the gob wants to help the people or help themselves?”.

Answer will reveal a lot about a persons intelligence or ignorance.

The video is an explanation and discussion of an old essay that is still available for purchase, but I would guess there are free version out there:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...uman-stupidity

On #5 I believe that the stupid were doubly dangerous because:

- like the helpless/hapless they can be lead in destructive directions by bandits

- unlike the helpless/hapless their chaotic nature makes them apt to "mess things up" no matter who is in charge; so e.g. a bandit leader may be intending a limited/targeted amount of damage for their own benefit, but stupid people could instead turn that into widespread damage, or serious/long term damage either because the stupid people are actively self-harming or just don't think through their actions enough to judge where the line is for themselves [see: just following orders].

It does represent self-interest vs. "book learning".

intelligent = seek win/win outcomes
helpless = follow the herd, win for others/loss for themselves
bandits = seek to win/unconcerned with losses for others

stupid = seeking to lose [self-destructive], or are incapable of winning

loss for themselves + loss for others

Seems to me that one sort of stupidity [self-destructive] encompasses a lot of people, including plenty that "pass" as successful.

A lot of IQ is processing speed and ability. The reason you see people with seemingly high IQ having a PhD or are academically advance, yet see quite stupid in the grand scheme of things, is basically putting their IQ towards things of less value or one highly specific importance. I'll give you two real life examples I know.

Example 1: I know a woman who is a teacher (or professor?) that has her masters and was working towards her PhD. A family friend told me she had upwards 250k in student loans and yet made 60k a year. She was in her 30s and was also delivering pizza on the weekends.

Example 2: My dad worked for a dealership for many years, but is now retired. One day his buddies friend came in, a mexican man with broken english. The guy was in dirty jeans, boots, and a t shirt. He came in and bought a new truck....cash. That day. Come to find out my dad's friend said that guy owns his own lawn care business and also that guy and his brother own some inflatable jumpy business for kids parties and these guys make probably deep into six figures profit.

So which is more intelligent. The girl with highly specific academic and subject specific expertise but is 250k in unpayable debt with a ****ty career, or the guy with broken english with 2 businesses, no debt and buys everything in cash.

So intelligence is so broad and over so many aspects of life that it only really determines one thing. Ability. To what really depends on too many factors to really find value in it. Also another factor to look at is time period. Intelligence directly applies to necessity. For example, we live in the information age. Intelligence to me in this current age would be the ability of discernment and application. Whereas someone in the Industrial Age would consider intelligence to be complex engineering and application en scale.

People are corruptible. Although I am not a catholic, I do like their outlook on the 7 deadly sins. They really show how people can be corrupted and enslaved, not by just material things, but their own vices and desires. This is a very prevalent topic today because we are seeing a result of some type of mass psychosis and people forfeiting their ability to think and discern in return for comfort and ease of ignorance.

Unless your degree is from a top school, and is actually a complex subject, IMO it means absolute **** regarding IQ.

And as you say, if you can solve the most complex equation in 5 minutes, but you get a flat on the middle of the road and you can’t change it and have to stay hours there waiting for someone to help you, can you really consider yourself intelligent?
