Official OB Misc Camping Thread

Just booked 2 sites with a 3rd in the works this weekend. It was surprising to see how many openings there were so if you are into camping, now is a great time to snag some good spots.

I was able to snag reservations at Cataloochee Campground (GSMNP) for late may. We are hoping to catch the synchronous firefly's that show up in the smokies.

The other booked site is at Big South Fork (TN/KY Border) for mid April. The park is huge and usually very quiet.

I am excited to go camping with the family, my son will be 2 years old at that point. We took him out 4 times this last season and it was a good time. We are trying to arrange a big family camping trip between us and my brahs family.

Anyone making moves for the spring?

Not exactly camping, but would like to get more into spending time in nature like this guy. Looked at this youtube a bit - sry not english. but kind of cool as he tries various places to sleep over etc, cooking while out and so on. Beautiful in some places, going up rivers and so on with no other ppl around.

I go to a lot of music festivals in the spring, summer, fall… i have been considering going just camping but i really like the music too. Do we consider music festivals camping? I stay in a tent in the woods so it seems like it would fit.

Still can be overstimulating so might kind of defeat the purpose

Edit- I don’t know what people imagine when I say festival. I go to ones in New England- not like Coachella or the one in Miami lol

Yes plus after further thinking I face the same decisions many campers make. Like how to make the camping experience more comfortable.

What do people sleep on? I can’t do the ground anymore. I typically use an air mattress which seems to work the best for me but it’s not great for cold weather camping. I think the lowest I camp in is like 32-35, try not to go lower than that especially with an air mattress. I have a foam mattress I was using but it was shit for packing and I find an air-mattress is surprisingly better for my back.

Lol, I could sleep on the ground I think, but would just bring a thin light weight yoga mat thing - enough for me I think. I was a bit out of my element as a city kid in the service. We just had those thin things to sleep on, and a fire/heating thing in the centre.

i actually haven't tried in a while. I switched to the air-mattress because the ground would freeze which made things absolutely awful. I bought the air-mattress to combat that. I didn't think of the air- its still better if i put a wool blanket and other layers.. better than the ground at least. I think ive convinced myself that the ground would kill my back nowadays but honestly I don't know. a few years ago I developed chronic pain and i cant seem to get rid of it

Ive been kind of interested in using a cot but i think then id give up space. i think suspension is really good. i dont know how suspended a cot is but hammocks are amazing. I need to learn how to be a hammock owner soon

I say get out there! The second half of my life has definitely been dominated by being out in nature and I love it. Im happy I get to share it with my kiddo now too. Life hits different when there is no reception ;).

Yup I agree that many go too long without reconnecting with nature. When I first get out to a site without reception, its crazy how much I still go to check my phone on the first day. Luckily you drop the habit pretty quickly but I always lol when I realize what Im doing.

I have a couple different sleep systems but I fully understand the "back hurts and the ground aint it" sentiment. In terms of car camping, a cot+inflating foam mattress is my go to (expad is the bougie version, I got a knock-off). The R value on the mattress is 5 or so and you are off the ground. I get consistent good, warm sleep with this setup and I have been as low as freezing out. Its been a couple years of using this combo and my wife even agrees that she will be switching to a similar setup (she had back issues too).

For the regular air mattresses, I have never had great success with them being consistently good and even the expensive ones get destroyed quickly. Air mattresses are also non-insulating so that usually means extra blankets or a heavier bag.

Try out a hammock before making the full commitment, I have heard that not everyone enjoys sleeping in one.
