Haven't Lifted in over 2 Years

First of all, it's fucking amazing to see this forum back up and to see some familiar names around.

I'll keep this as short as possible. 2 years ago I was doing some weights, went to bed feeling great and woke up in the morning unable to move.

From my neck, through my shoulder, down my left arm to my finger tips I had searing pain. After some scans they found bursitis in my shoulder which I've pretty much fixed through exercise with those elastic band thingos.

Now I'm hesitant to even pickup a weight, the pain was so intense and unrelenting that I took months off work because I couldn't drive.

Have any of you had a similar experience? How did you get back to lifting? Have you been able to avoid repeat injury?

Keen to get strong again, I can feel myself getting weaker and it can't continue.

And just in case anyone recommends chiropractors, don't bother, they can all suck my dick.

Cheers brahs.

Sounds like alot more than bursitis.
I call burshit on that doctors evaluation. If your whole arm goes out like that starting from the neck.
Im guessing its nerve related?

Eitherway i would skip heavy pressing and heavy lifts in general.
Solid warmups and more athletic workouts with functional movements. Like rowing and the assault bike for starters.
Then some time down the line bodyweight calisthenics.

I destroyed my shoulder 2 springs ago, lifted, went paddle boarding, went golfing, then came home and had pretty wild sex with my girlfriend. I went to bed with some mild pain in my shoulder, and woke up practically unable to lift my arm. I needed help putting on a shirt because I couldn't lift my arm. I took a couple months off, and started lifting very light weights with higher reps. I had to do that with every single lift for upper body because your shoulder is involved in everything. I did rows only until I could do pullups with band assist. Then I went throught the bands over a long period of time until I could do pullups without them again. But every exercise I do now is in the 10-15 rep range with moderate weights, I just carried the program forward for the past 2 years adding weight over time. I started with 10's on the bar for bench I'm up to 185x5x15 now, and just the bar for OHP. I was pretty out of shape that first summer, but I have my physique back now, just don't move as heavy of weights anymore.

Best advice as you get back into it, if it hurts stop doing it. Wait a week and try again with lower weight.

had a rotator cuff tear + bursitis for years, couldn't move my arm full motion+chronic pain (couldn't even put my arm behind the back), trained around it with carefully choosing exercises that wouldn't cause any pain + following physio mobility and strengthening programs via high quality litterature.

zero pain today, can box, wrestle, powerlift full motion.
You can't fight fate

It's definitely nerve related, I could feel it like a string.

About 3 months ago I had slowly worked my way up to 100 push ups per day. Then suddenly the same thing happened again, no pain after the workout, just a tight feeling in my neck and the next day I was back to square one.

Maybe being more patient and sticking to light weights is key. Might start with the 5kg dumbbell and work my way up slowly from there.

Thanks man, super helpful. I think rows is a great idea, and getting some rotation through the shoulder will help if it's not too loaded.

Yeah it's no longer painful, I'm just worried it'll happen again. I definitely have some nerve damage though, my finger tips have lost some feeling... imagine how it feels when you touch something while wearing a band aid on your finger, it's exactly like that.

I have disc degen in spine, ignore the numbness

Playing into pain just brings other long term issues from not working out

Do cardio etc ,work around the area slowly until the doubt is out of your mind

If you did 100 push ups daily and it came back. This leads me to think your shoulder posture is the cause of the nerve getting irritated.
Wich is good because youre in control of that.
I had a nerve issue in my neck from bad posture and it never came back again after i fixed it.

If i were you i would lay low on everything pushing related and focus on the posterior chain.
And do a whole lot of dead hangs. Those keep my shoulders feeling fresh. If i go without i start getting stiff immediately

Posture is definitely a factor as well. At the time I was trying to correct my bad posture, keeping my chin slightly down, shoulders back etc... but the neck still gave way which is probably form related. What did you do to correct your posture?

Welcome back, brah. Training rear delts more and dead hangs helped with my shoulder pain, but don't overdo it with anything especially pressing movements. Start slow with light weights and bands.

Had something similar! What helped me was gradual reintroduction of neck and shoulder movements

Cervical CARs
Cervical Retractions with resistance
Wall Angels
I-Y-T Rows with resistance bands

These movements can be monotonous, but think of it as reintroducing movement to your body in a way that it's familiar with and assuring yourself that you won't get injured in these positions
Have fun and be yourself :-)

I lifted 6 days a week for 16 years straight until covid and then I just quit. I go every once in a while but it's literally just for that day. I keep wanting to get back into it but I just dont have no urgency to do it.
