Do we have any camping brahs here?

Excited for another year of camping with the family! I booked 3 reservations already for the spring, the one I am most excited for would be Cataloochee at GSMNP, I have not yet explored the eastern parts of the park. The boy will be 2 at this point too, so it will be fun get him out there again. I am also planning a trip for my best friend to come visit with his family and we take the families out camping together. My friend and I would camp a bunch together back when we were kids/teens so it's exciting to pass the tradition on to our little ones. I would like to get some solo backpacking in too but we will see where this falls on my priority list.

Do we have any other campers here at OB Misc? What is your plans for this camping season?

Ha I appreciate the constraint. Im originally from Queens, but spent most of my life across the river in NJ so I was a city boy at one time too.

When we car camp, my sleep system is pretty damn comfortable. Its a bit small on the width but I get some damn good sleep on it. Backpacking sleeping is okay at best, mediocre usually and horrible sometimes. I dont blame you here lol.

I think my days of car camping are pretty much over. I mostly canoe camp these days, sometimes with my kids but mostly solo. I prefer the quiet and solitude these days over the activity of a campground but each has its place

Your assumption of tent camping is correct. When people say "Car Camping", what they mean is its a drive-up tent site. You park either next to the campsite or a short distance away, it makes hauling heavy things much easier. You can have a nice but heavy mattress or tent or whatever, you are just carrying it 400ft at most. Backpack camping you haul all your shit with you for many miles, so more sacrifices are made in terms of comfort to shed weight.

Awesome! I actually recently moved to an area where canoe camping is much more of a possibility, thanks for getting my gears going now lol. What is your setup like?

Campgrounds are not my favorite either but they are convenient. Go on a Sunday-Monday-Tuesday and it's deserted in most cases. We like smaller state parks and private land camping (Hipcamp) more than the bigger national parks just due to being on-top of one another in the campgrounds.

You’re right in that timing makes a big difference for how busy it is. When I go alone I have a hammock tent. I’ve only taken that on one trip but it was a game changer for comfort. My canoe is pretty heavy, 16 ft about 65 lbs so I always double portage (or triple with my family lol).

I camp at music festivals from april-October . I am considering camping camping this summer. Something less stimulating but I really like adding live music to my camping experiences 😂

I read my post and I think I created confusion. I don’t live at music festivals for those months lol. I go during those months and I bring my kids to some of them.

I don't camp. I need a bathroom with running water and real bed, but we go hiking in National parks. We did a week in Glacier National Park in fall of 2024, Grand Canyon and Sedona last spring and next fall we're going to Banff/Jasper. I love seeing the sites but ugh I hate hate hate pit toilets/no running water.

See below for a pic from a hike done on last camping trip.
Taken near Mt. Marcy.
Camping feels good because I'm away from phone, responsibilities, other obligations, just to be present and try to make the most of the day. Doggo likes it too

Glacier is an amazing park. We went across into Alberta to their Waterton Lakes section. That was amazing too

We did one day in Waterton on that trip. That whole area is just absolutely beautiful. Did you do the Bear Hump? Amazing view up there.

The Glacier hikes we did were:

Grinnell Glacier Trail - elevation gain 1854 ft elevation 8.5 miles

Bear Hump in Waterton Canada-711 ft elevation  1.5 miles

Highline Trail from Logan Pass to Garden Wall - 666 elevation 6.43 miles

Hidden Lake Overlook - 551 ft elevation 2.7 miles

Three Falls Trail - Baring Falls, St Mary Falls & Virginia Falls 728 ft elevation 5.2 miles

Avalanche Lake - 653 elevation 5.5 miles Hidden Lake

Overlook and Highline trail were same day

The goal one day is to either have enough rural land to have a campsite on property or buy super rural property just for camping on. One day.

Is this like one of those Old Town Canoes? We would rent them all the time and go down the Delaware. You got me looking at FB marketplace lmao.

Dope! One day I hope to build my own camp site with primitive tools. You hunt out of the camp as well?

Havent been to Glacier but I hear good things. Grand Canyon I have been 3 times, I was planning on a R2R for this year but I think ill try next year instead. Banff is amazing and Jasper is just as nice, it will be a good time.

I prefer to shit in the woods vs the pit toilets.

Dope picture! Your feels are similar to mine. I am a slave to the sun during the day and the campfire at night. Other than that and food, its adventure time. Hike or swim or mountain biking or doing a bunch of acid and laying in a field.

Highly recommend Glacier. It's absolutely beautiful. That was our first National Park trip and it's going to be hard to live up to that. Banff is supposedly very similar.

No we didn’t. We did take the ferry to Goat Haunt and I’m blanking out on of the other hikes, but it was up above the snow line in August which was cool

This Spring i hope to for spring gobbler. I now have a buddy heater, with a 10ft hose and 2 propane tanks and additional power bank. It's 16ft diameter so I have tons of room. I only go where I have good cell service and and hotspot my phone to stream TV at nite. This was an old log landing i cleaned up and mowed and sprayed roundup. Made the fire pit. Etc

They vary in how family friendly they are. There’s some I definitely wouldn’t take kids to- my kids are 16 and 11. My youngest has a one wheel he rides around and we know people at them from going a while.

Kayaking in the lakes is also pretty nice, just go out to the middle of the lake and just be still with the warm sunlight hitting your skin.

Looking forward to doing some more camping this year.

Oh nice. We were only there for the day so limited. We did a horseback ride in the morning to a lake, then the Bear Hump and then we ate a late lunch at the Kilmorey Lodge and went back Montana. The view from the top of the Bear Hump was beautiful. All the water surrounding the town and the mountains in the distance.
