"buy once cry once" is a dumb saying and bad advice

in general.

its always situation dependent, but in my experience the majority of situations its better to buy cheap then if you find out you really will use or need the item, then go all out.

the amount of times I've bought the cheap item and it was more than sufficient for me, or I didn't even end up using the item that long - far outweighs the other times.

buy cheap or end up with a bunch of expensive shit you don't use/need laying around.

used is often a good alternative too

True

Most of the time the luxury item won't last a lifetime anyways

Even something like tools a lot of times harbor freight is just fine if you only use it once for one project

I'll take this under advisement if I ever stop making money

Depends on what it is and what it's used for. I'd rather pay extra and have something that I'm really happy with rather than save money and then not be satisfied.

Always keep in mind that the value factor has personal reasons.

I agree but my argument is more often than not you don't know if you will use it enough to warrant the expensive version. obviously in some cases you do.

I think buying the cheap version then if you find out you are using it and or need the expensive version, then you do it. and you'll have a better idea of what you want at that point too. and very often you'll realize the cheap version is sufficient for your needs even if you do use it a bunch.

The theory that you dont cheap out on brakes and tires on your vehicle is legit.

Things like clothes and furniture and stuff, you can do OK by buying the mid priced items, or even on the cheaper side. Only the very cheapest crap you avoid because it will fall apart sooner.

Shampoo and soap and stuff I will buy the store brand and be just fne. Same with a lot of food.

My iPhone 12 that I bought 5 years ago, when it was the previous years model, was a good investment. Solid hardware and the battery is still at 83%. The el cheapo Galaxy J33 I had before it for like $120 was OK, though.

I wont come enywhere a new vehicle with a cheap plastic turbo 3 cylinder and all kinds of subscription services and a huge screen that will advertise to you at stoplights at all. Give me a 15 year old Mercury Grabnd Marquis anyday.

No doubt. I've been a mechanic for over 25 years and I'm one of those older techs with a big Snap On box. So cringe when these lube techs and parts changers try to almost flex saying "you could have saved money buying harbor freight" as though the salesman got on over on me or I believe propaganda, or I'm stupid or whatever. However, look in my box, sure there is a lot of snap on, but you'll see harbor freight, Texton, Sunnex, and a whole lot of no-name-brand stuff in there too. Also, I'll tell a lube tech or new mechanic not to get on the truck and to go to Harbor Freight, Northern, and Amazon. For one thing, you have more options today, and for another, you find out what you need. Sure, when you use it all day every day, there is a reason why that Snap-On is worth it. Ironic now though, I don't use 90% anymore because I'm more or less a manager now. Still, I don't regret my setup at all.

Oh, and another example, Toyota cost more, and usually has less features than say a Hyundai/Kia, but you are a fool if you think you are getting a better value with the Hyundai/Kia.

man that's the perfect example. the lube tech needs to start out with HF but once they know its their career invest in the good shit and it'll save you so much hassle over your career

and your snap on stuff is gold in resale value

agreed on Toyota too. cars in general I think are one area where buy once cry once makes sense.. partly because your life is at stake

A Vita Mix will outlast 3 or 4 cheap blenders.

A Miele vacuum will outlast 3 or 4 cheap vacuums.

A Breville Toaster will outlast 3 or 4 cheap toaster ovens.

A Speed Queen or Maytag washer or dryer will outlast 3 or 4 cheap washers (especially LG)

True. I used to be big on high-end dress shoes and would tell other people to buy them (goodyear welted, Italian leather etc). The reality is, I WFH and I wear them maybe once per year. Most people could buy $20 dress shoes and be fine.

Go to estate sales and you can probably find 30+ year old appliances that will outlast the new stuff.

I really hope people are waking up to the reality of LG/Samsung/GE/Ect appliances. They cost a lot of money, and then they break and are extremely expensive to repair. Not only that, but a lot of them, they stop making the parts when the new model comes out so you can't fix them.

I've never spent more than $150 on a phone and I use to cap it at $100. Then I kept running out of room for pics/videos of my kid so I decided to up my phone budget $50 for more memory. Once I was in the store and 2 people that were battling poverty bought 2 $800 phones. At the time it was before my divorce when I had 6 figures just sitting in my bank account and I was buying a poverty $50 smart phone.
