Can't Recalibrate To New Food Prices

I just don't think it is going to happen.

I took my daughter and her friend for fast food at lunch. I got two tacos, and between them they got another 6 items and one soft drink. Almost all cheap stuff- crispy beef tacos and bean burritos.

$30

I can't help but do the math and I know that when I was their age, and even older, that meal would have been more like $12. I mean 8 of the 9 items were on dollar menus for years.

Welcome to the new normal. You can forget prices ever coming down. Those pre-coivd days are over...

We'll only see prices increase, not decrease, as much as our leaders in Washington DC talk and promise about lowering prices, it will never happen.

Oh, I get it.

I'm not expecting the lower prices to come back. But I also can't seem to fully resign myself to what everything costs now.

I mean there had already been a gradual creep across the years, only now it's really jarring.

I know that it's pretty normal that e.g. I remember getting $5 plate lunches at sit down restaurants and that is long gone.

$12+ for some fast food combo meal is harsh.

Prices went up and wages didn’t.

Part of the issue is companies think they can charge whatever. I guess if people buy it sure.

My friend noticed that what was prior to the pandemic a $170 knife is now $300, where as a competitors knife only went from $450-500 in the same timeframe.

I have the same problem with automobiles. I still have in my head what they cost in 2006 and think everyone today is high trying to rip me off for 20k for a used shitbox with 100k miles on it.

I think it's normal when you get old for this to happen. Kind of like shitting your pants I guess

Was talking to a friend about the price increase at bars, when we were in college we had 50c beers, and now a beer at some podunk dive bar is at least 12-14$. No wonder the zoomers don't drink

lol

The car situation is also insane. I've only purchased two cars in my life- one in 1999 for $12K and one in 2007 for $18K. I'm still driving the second one. These were bought new (Toyota and Honda).

I saw an article within the past month that said there are no longer ANY new cars for sale in the US for $20K. And IIRC the median new car price is about $50K.

Absolutely.

IDK about 50 cents, but $2 was pretty standard for a long long time unless you ordered something fancy.

Lol, bars are actually getting cheaper again. I have a Mexican spot that I go to. It had gone up to like $7 for a Modelo and $11 for the shittiest shot of tequila, but now they have happy hour with $3 beers and cheap fucking shots. It's great being able to get shitfaced for like $30 again.

When I was in college, one of the 3 grocery stores in town would have either Carlings Black Label or Schaeffer Light on sale for $6/case (0.25/beer). One of the bars had a "bladder buster" night every Thursday. Nickel beers until someone either went to the restroom or left.

Wow.

I don't eat at a lot of the places in these clips. It's even crazier than I knew.

$17 for a chicken sandwich w/fries and a drink at Shake Shack
$15 for a soda and two gorditas at Taco Bell
$33 for an 8 piece family meal at KFC. I'm old. I remember when that was $9.99 w/a coupon.
$52.64 for 2 burrito bowls and 2 drinks at Chipotle
$52 for breakfast and coffee for 2 at Denny's
$4.19 for McD's double cheeseburger
$5.99 for an egg McMuffin
$20 for 6 chicken tenders at KFC
