They're getting paid regardless, should not be a concern - unless someone is earning big money and not preparing for the upcoming bill which - honestly - is a lot of people I've known over the years.

One dude I know, back in 2020, claimed a bunch of the covid support and made very good money that year - bought himself a house with something around 40% deposit and filled the thing with brand new everything then got a brand new BMW M3 Competition - no tax planning, then copped a tax bill of nearly $250k. Nothing to cover it off with. Whoops.

There was a scam that Sydney barristers were doing, basically they were putting all their assets in their wife’s name and then declaring bankruptcy at the end of every financial year and getting out of paying income tax.

This is why the ATO now does tax instalments for PAYG earners on “other” earnings and withholding tax on certain large capital transactions

Something like 200 taxes on the books all up, and in 2023-24 Amazon paid less than $150m tax on $6.6bn earned from Australian operations out of warehouses built in Australia because they were filtering all earnings through shell companies to tax haven countries. CostCo also paid zero Australian tax, but paid a $300m dividend or whatever the Americans call it to the American parent company. $300m gone from the economy with no taxes paid on profit. But Joe Average who tries to start his own business in Australia has so many hoops to jump through and within two years the tax office fucks him harder than a pack of horny bears to the point he declares bankruptcy.

What’s also a joke is that the people digging up and selling iron ore, gas etc are basically paying nothing for it, and that shit belongs to everyone

Honestly if they just dropped the top marginal rate to, like, 30 per cent, a lot of people would quit all the tax strategy bullshit and just pay it.

For 47 cents on the dollar though, you might as well hire a team of accountants and lawyers, you literally have nothing to lose
