My son wants a dog (srs)
What do?
I’m a little afraid of dogs and he wants a big one. I’ve never had a dog so it’s very new. I think I want to get a Labrador retriever puppy from a reputable breeder. I know people say go the rescue route but I worry about getting dogs whete their behaviors might be shocking. Is this wrong? Can any dog have good behaviors or should I stick to my original more expensive plan? He wants to have it from a puppy. I’m also thinking about bringing him to the animal shelter weekly. Maybe there could be a younger but full grown dog he falls in love with that already has good behaviors.
Anyways what chall think?
Any middle of the road plans? My most risk averted plan is going to be thousands of dollars

if u never had a dog u have no idea think of this has having a child the first months srs that's what I've heard
we are talking dedicated time too u can't just wing it srs
and u can't offload this to a child u have to take responsibility honey ur son will find other interests a long the way but the dog still needs his walks etc so
with that said a doggo can be one of the most rewarding experiences srs and it will teach him responsibility so if u want one too get one

How old is your son? When I was ~10 or so, my parents would take me to an animal shelter and have me walk dogs for a few hours every week for a year. I got to play with dogs but also served as a lesson that I wasn't ready for the responsibilities of having a dog

Update- I know that the responsibility will ultimately fall on me. It’s involved in my decision making around getting the dog. I want a dog too I think.

I have had pure bred dogs (retrievers, English Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers) and I currently have two pitbull rescues. Go rescue route.
IMO a 2-3 year old female is the best fit for families. The puppy behavior and energy has subsided, and they keep that maternal instinct. Overall a lot calmer than male dogs. If you are going to rescue go to the shelter and have a long talk with the volunteers before you even see one, they will know the best fit for you and they want those dogs to fit with families.
My kids love our girls, they each sleep with one. Very good for managing their anxiety.

Perhaps I suggest finding a Husky. Tons of them in shelters, and they are sweet dogs.
Plus, they love freezing temps incase you leave him or her out in the cold.
