Cannot believe people simply just flew across oceans in the 50's and 60's

Even with technology today as great as it is I still have troubles like flying across oceans like the Pacific. Have only done so once for a family wedding which I absolutely could not miss. I've Flown to Ecuador and Honduras several times for a aid work but other than that never fly. What I can't believe is how many regular citizens just flew on regular planes thousands of miles across the globe back in the 1950's and 1960's when it was still so new. It's one thing to accept risk if you're going on a military mission but I have no idea how so many people were open to something this crazy and new back then.

Death was more acceptable back in those days. Many people died in childbirth, or in war, or in workplace accidents. People didn't view their lives as so meaningful that they were scared of dying on an airplane.

If you've ever been to other countries you'll realize the Anglosphere is unusual in its regard for human life.

Most other countries they'll have accidents that kill people and just go on with their day. It's reflected in everything from their safety and sanitation standards to the way they drive.

I think the USA also used to be like that 50-100 years ago. But we got so rich that we could afford crumple zones in cars and airplanes that don't crash.

Now even minor accidents feel gigantic to us because we have no reference to compare it to.

I've been really wanting to buy a vision jet. They're not overly expensive or costly to operate. If I were retired and wanted to travel 4-5x per month, it would be a lot of fun.

The range on these is only like 2.5 hours before needing to stop and refuel. It's surprisingly easy to just land at the nearest airport and refuel and take a shit and then take off again.

This would be the coolest fucking thing

+8Owning a Cirrus Vision Jet SF50 generally costs between $250,000 and $350,000+ annuallyfor 150–200 flight hours, covering fuel, insurance, and maintenance. A new G2+ model costs roughly $3.3M–$3.9M+, while used G2 models trade from $2.5M–$3.3M. The true hourly cost often lands between $1,250 and $2,000, assuming 200+ flight hours. Facebook +4

What people usually do is have their business buy the jet, then you just deduct all of the expenses off of your corporate income. It's a lot easier to justify in this scenario if you have a business throwing off something like $3M+ per year.

My great aunt and her sister drove half way across the country in a Model T to visit family. That to me is absolutely mind blowing and the woman had more balls than I do. I own 3 antique cars and only one of them would I drive across the country and thats because I have a cell phone, tool box and know how to fix it.

Sadly, low cost airlines are letting vermin be able to fly.

We now have Greyhound Busses in the sky, and everything that comes with low IQ, low class, low-impulse-control people being allowed to fly.

Section 8 on an airplane, is asking for trouble.

Some international flights, it's "required" to spray insecticide upon landing before opening the doors, the logic is that it will prevent invasive species from taking over a new continent. Customs will get on your ass about it otherwise.

I've never had to do it but it is definitely a thing.
