tbh i'm genuinely curious if any parent on Christmas Day gave their child a pet-rock as a substitute for a puppy or something back in the 70s. I do not mean the parent was making a dad-joke or any sort of trolling ...just genuinely thinking child would like a pet-rock instead.
Around 1.3–1.5 million Pet Rocks were sold during the 1975–1976 craze, generating roughly $5–6 million in gross revenue (about $27–30+ million in today's dollars).
Key Details:Retail price: Typically $3.95 each (sometimes rounded to $4 in reports).
Sales volume: Most sources cite nearly 1.5 million units sold in the initial run (mainly late 1975 into early 1976), with the fad peaking around Christmas 1975.
Some reports mention over 1 million in the first six months. A few outlier claims of 5 million appear exaggerated or incorrect.
Gross revenue: About $5.9–6 million at the time.Profit for creator Gary Dahl: He reportedly made around $1 million net (about $4.5–6.7 million today, depending on the inflation adjustment), after costs, investors, retailers, and shipping. He earned roughly 95 cents per rock in profit.
The craze lasted only about 6 months before fading due to market saturation and knockoffs. Dahl sourced plain stones cheaply (from Mexico) and packaged them in a cardboard box with straw and a humorous care manual. It was a massive marketing success driven by media buzz.

Those are boulders, not rocks
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."
