Something I noticed in the south is a lot of people “go by” their middle name. It is weird

I’m born and raised in Atlanta and my family is from here dating back to like the 1800s. I’ve barely met anybody in my entire life that goes by their middle name, but there’s been maybe a handful of people that did. It’s not a common thing in my experience.
