I'm not gonna lie, the @Meta layoffs are some of the most dystopian I've ever seen. They got told to work from home, they were sent the emails at 4AM in the morning. Those who weren't impacted have software on their computer that tracks their every move, preparing AI to take their job as well. They're literally training the AI that will eliminate their position as well.

Meanwhile, Meta is raking in RECORD PROFITS.

I am a massive, unapologetic AI enthusiast. Yet, this is NOT the future I had in mind.

I wish for Meta to crash and burn. This is not the way. Literally nobody benefits from this.

This is actually very common nowadays to send people home on days of big layoffs. It has nothing to do with AI, it's all the fact that these companies way overhired during COVID and are now becoming mature companies and don't need such a massive bloated workforce with interest rates so high.

Most of these people should feel lucky they had the opportunity to work for a tech company in its hayday and likely earning 2-3x their actual labor market value.

What exactly do you do? I haven't delved too deep in it yet. Most of the stuff I have seen it do I have already developed a similar process.

I feel like I am either disconnected from the process or people are amazed at stuff people had already been doing.

Not surprised that there are this many layoffs. They seemed over staffed and lazy when I did some work there. They left early every day to "work from home" and I had to practically beg them to get documents/info.

They aren't being replaced by AI at all

H1b visas are increasing, they hired thousand of pradeeps

Also those on non AI related projects are getting laid off. Metaverse, meta glasses ect those are getting. Downsizes and cancelled and resources r edirected but they lay off those workers since their experience isn't in AI


Companies LOVE the AI excuse because people feel it's inevitable and they get mad at AI and not the executives replacing US workers with h1b pradeeps

Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta hire AI companies like Scale AI and Mercor who hire independent contractors who have experience/skills across various domains who help train, evaluate, and improve their AI models.

Some example roles mercor has (a lot more on the link I posted above):

- Investment Banking experts ($100–130/hr)
- MBB consultants (~$100/hr)
- Legal specialists ($85–120/hr)
- Cardiologists/Radiologists/Psychiatrists ($130–180/hr)
- IP and patent lawyers ($85–120/hr)

I know guys who are IB and PE VPs doing this shit on the side lol

I will say it took me 21 applications with mercor to finally get onboarded to a project. While some people do get conistent work this shouldn't be the expectation and it should be seen more as a supplement to your regular income.

Most of those people had like 30 minutes of real work to do a day and it's just putting info from one document into a other. Like data from a data base that needs to go into a power point.

It became fashionable to layoff now. During COVID they had so much excess cash and decided to "reinvest it in growth" with massive hirings, that pumped their stocks. Now people have already accepted that AI is taking over so there is no PR loss for them, they lay off people that weren't doing anything in the first place and now their stocks pump again due to reduced cost

I met a guy who was already laid off by meta last year, he worked on the meta glasses and when that project was done they laid him off, the big push is the AI teams but they weren't moving him there as that wasn't his expertise
