I was reading about Layne Stayley's deterioration (Alice in Chains)
Sad story. My crew and I loved Alice in Chains back in the 90's when we were in college.
He just sort of wasted away and died over the span of about 5 years, and angrily refused any kind of help. The only clue to his major depression waas the death of his fiance in 1997. He still had times where he would write songs here and there, but he needed help. He was down to 86 pounds and was missing teeth and died from an overdose on speedball.

So I found myself in the sun, oh yeah
A hell of a place to end a run, oh yeah
California, I'm fine
Somebody check my brain
California's all right

Awful way to go, but ultimately did it to himself. There seemed to be a lot of support around him, but when someone goes into a depression like that they're the only ones that can pull themselves out of it.

I believe he also appeared on a documentary about the impact of absentee fathers which he experienced growing up.
Furthermore just as they were hitting peak popularity he was becoming a rapid baldcel and I think that fuarked his confidence up too.
Number of factors involved probably.
Also wanna point out Jerry Cantrell is a really underrated song writer.
