Pick one

Citi Double Cash is pretty good at 1% when you spend and 1% when you pay it off on everything. If you're doing the majority of your spending at a place like Amazon or Costco, their cards will net a higher percentage. Other cards have spend categories like restaurants, groceries, and gas stations where you can get higher percentages back. You kinda have to research on sites like Nerd Wallet. There are YT channels dedicated to credit card rewarda too.

If you're about to drop $2k, a lot of cards have introductory offers like "Spend $6k in the first 6 months and get 100k airline miles" or whatever. This gives you a $2k head start on that, and if you live in a first world country making up the $4k with general spending (food, bills, gas) is easy.

So do that.

A lot of the cashback (2-5%) is pretty much the same everywhere.

Citi strata Premier

3x or restaurants, plus gets you halfway there to its 60k reward. Also has great categories like 3x on gas and groceries.

Or

Chase Sapphire Preferred

3x on restaurants and 75k welcome bonus but shitty point categories but better transfer partners

If it's a 1 shot thing, then just google welcome bonuses, find the best one, do that, finish it, cancel the credit card after, no need to overthink past that. The cash back percent is mostly irrelevant because the welcome bonus will be much more.

I've done this many times whenever I know I have a 1 shot purchase coming up that will finish the welcome bonus. You can keep doing it up to a point, then the Israelis at the CC companies start denying you the welcome bonus.

Closing lines of credit and having short-lived credit both negatively impact your credit score, so I wouldn't take this approach on a regular basis. Finding a card with a strong welcome bonus is a good idea.

Depends on the categories. Outside of that, hard to beat Wells Fargo Active Cash at 2% for everything else. There are some that do 3%-5% but have relatively low limits (i.e. 3% up to $6k, then drops to 1% after that).

For those who are into the credit card games, you can pay your taxes with credit cards to max out these bonuses. Sometimes the cash back is more than the fee.

In response to OP's question, Citi DoubleCash is best for beginners

Just bought this for my friend, gift for her dad. Brb I get the points and spend history up for a juicy Daytona or something else hard to get.

I'm not an expert on credit score so you could be right.

That being said, my credit score is around 780-790 and I don't put any thought or effort into it and I churned and canceled credit cards a lot.

Seems like it might not be hurting you much if it isn't significantly changing your credit utilization.

I don’t close them I just use them enough to get the welcome bonus then pay them off and lock the card I’ve probably got 10 or more credit cards locked that I don’t use anymore
