Adults lying to kids their whole lives about the future (ruslted)
as a kid I had everyone, my parents, teachers, adult family members, telling me I could do whatever/be rich when i grow up. now i'm slowly realizing the precious days of my life will most likely be limited to sitting down at a computer and working for hours on end for some company that doesn't give a chit about me and only wants to get richer. what a scam. why do they lie? as a kid i was pretty sharp, i would have appreciated if they just straight up told me 'hey so you've got like an 80% chance of doing what we're all doing, being an adult is chit and you'll amount to about 60k/year if you even get a job out of college boyo. you'll count the minutes off the clock and pray that it is friday, or that Jim brought in some donuts at least. then you'll be pressured into marriage and, well...enjoy lmao!'.

So phuking true. Nobody ever told me how brutal the rat race is and how depressing working 40+ hours at a place you don't really want to be at is. My major is aerospace engineering so I'll probably get paid decent when I get a career job but I know it won't make me happy. Wish my parents would have taught me to think outside of the box to find a way to get rich or start a business so I could escape the 9-5 life

Doesn't matter what you're told when you're that young, you're naturally going to want to see it for yourself.
People who were meant to be a somebody will become a somebody. Those who are meant to be bums become bums. Genetics go further than just physical appearance.
Just because you were raised Christian doesn't mean you'll remain the same. Likewise; people who grew up poor with chitty parents may very well end up rich themselves and vice versa.
You might be influenced slightly by certain people, situations or acts, but as a teenager or pre-teen, you can't possibly fathom the importance of lifestyle because you rely solely on your providers for everything.
Your parents may be living paycheck to paycheck struggling to feed you but do you really comprehend what that entails as a kid? All you know is that you have food on your plate everyday and clothes and that's how life is.
In the end you are who you are.
As I've grown a little older I see that alot more clearly.

Self-realization is the best form of learning in this type of situation. It's one thing to out-right lie to you, but they aren't lying when they say you can potentially be anything you want to be when you're so young. Think about it. They haven't realized how ugly you'll grow up to be, how short you'll be, how anti-social you will become, etc, so in their eyes you have potential. Notice how around middle school/high school parents will stop telling you these things unless you're actually on a trajectory to succeed (extremely talented/athletic/brilliant)

Maybe that is true but it hasn't been my experience. I came from a middle class family, went to public schools, I realized I didn't want that boring chit existence so I picked one of the hardest most promising majors in college, then worked my arse off to get into a good graduate program. Worked really hard after college for years to get where I am now. If you are a lazy pleb yes you can easily get stuck in a lifelong rut.

These life lessons aren't something that can be taught. They have to be learned.
What's worse is helicopter parents who don't let their kids do anything on their own, and start calling frantically if they aren't back home by 9. If their kids aren't rebellious enough to tell their parents to fuk off, they grow up mentally and socially stunted.

Deep down, on a subconscious level, older generations are a bit selfish because they know that one day they will be dependent and will want someone younger to look after them to ensure their survival.
Ever noticed how hyper-rustled baby boomers and older gen-Xers get if you say out loud that you wish you could never pay a cent into social security or any collective pension funds and just try to secure your own future retirement independently? These old fukkers paid into a ponzi scheme for years like the sheeple they are, and they don't want the gravy train to dry up when they're still alive. Once they're dead they couldn't care less if the economy collapses and half the population starves to death.
I think this "you can be anything you want to be" is part of this generational brainwashing to keep us subservient towards our elders. By the time young people realize its a lie, they're often stuck in a marriage and have a $400k mortgage on a house that would have cost $120k just 20 years earlier, and there's less opportunity for any form of rebellion against the status quo.

I dropped college (which was paid for by a scholarship because I busted my ass in highschool) to start trading, now I make my own hours and in a few years expect to have enough to live on my own terms while still having enough for growth.

Parents don't necessarily lie, I would say it's an exception for them to say you will be ultra successful. I'd vouch they'll provide assurance (Everything will work out just fine by itself), but this is less about lying and more about accepting their own mediocrity and relaying the same experience to you.

When I grew up, I wasn't told that stuff. In fact I was told things like, 'you better do XYZ or you're going to end up broke etc" on a regular basis. My dad would preach hard reality to me all the time and he was right 99.9% of the time. I do that with my kids, they don't always like to hear it but that's why I'm the dad. Their mom (my ex) may or may not tell them what they want to hear, but they'll get the truth from me. Which is why I'm the 'bad guy' but someone's got to set them straight.
