Because they can't actually afford a good BMW or Mercedes but want to be able to say they drive one.

For the social status and image in the eyes of other people srs

Get to say that they "drive" a German luxury car despite being in debt, leased, and etc

Their money and their decisions, I just mind my own business

Reliable cheap and efficient commute car + commuting motorcycle > car I can't afford srs

I kinda like the X1 though. Even though I am driving an M3. I always choose the X1 whenever I get a loaner.

Because it's a daily commuter vehicle. No one in their right mind buys a high model BMW or merc to drive it to and from work every day

I don't know that it necessarily makes you more attractive, but it definitely draws more attention.

The high tier BMW/Benz just for showing you have more $ than everyone else.

But seriously tho even the C class or 3 series will still get you some attention, imagine you drive a M6 or S class.

why do people get basic or 1999 Honda civics?

people get what they can afford and what they like the best for that price. or often times they get outside what they can really afford, and the best they can get that they like, a little outside that price. in both these scenarios its an entry level bmw sometimes. and if they need or want the car in that moment and especially if they're impulsive, they aren't waiting a year OP.

A fully loaded 125i with 200+HP or a250 is like 50k euros so not 'base' model to me at all.

I think a 518i with 16' wheels is a base model.

My thought when I read the thread was like "dude, sloots don't even know chit about entry level or not" if you drive a mercedes or a beamer thats +5/10 on whatever you had, even if its a weak model.

I think it's a lot like going around telling people you want to lose weight or are going to start working out. Driving around in an entry level luxury car is telling everyone you want to have money. I guess they think embarrassment / social pressure makes them more likely to work towards their goal.
