If you are pro gay marriage... (srs)

"Two consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't hurt other people."

1) Are you okay with two brothers getting married to each other?
2) What about an adult father and adult son?
3) What about a brother and sister, where the sister has hertubes tied so she can't have kidsand thus can't "hurt someone else" by giving them birth defects?

Just looking to see how people rationalize this! I'm not trying to get political. It's just an interesting discussion to me about, not legality, not politics.

Edit:i am stritctly interested in whether pro homosexuality people are pro or con incest, and the REASONS for it.I've seen many reasons lead to contradictions or strawman arguments, so I just want to get to the bottom of it.Whether its evolution, instinct, religion, some scientific data, whatever, I don't care. Just tell me the REASON.

I am not giving my own opinion so that I don't risk looking like I'm pushing some kind of agenda.

Two adults.

I give zero ****s what they do as long is it doesn't intrude on my life. If they wanna be weird and marry each other, let them. None of my business.

I think a lot of things are wrong, and shouldn't happen, but I'm not gonna rely on the government to outlaw them. They do enough damage already

We can't legislate degeneracy so it shouldn't be illegal, but it should never be accepted or encouraged.

I would be morally against those 3 mainly cause they are incest and that's ****ing gross, but like I said, I'm not gonna ask it be made illegal. Cause who am to tell someone else how to live their life when it doesn't impact mine? Esp when its between two adults

Why is it a horrible comparison?

Both homosexuality and incest (without children) fit the argument of "Two consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't hurt other people."

What is your rationale for drawing a distinction between the two of them?

Gay marriage isn't going to lead to creating kids with disabilites, unlike incest.

I don't think marriage is the government's business at all. Christian marriage is the business of the christian church and no one else. There should be no interference either way; christians should enforce whatever rules they like, but religious marriage should have no legal recognition whatsoever.

Ok but this is a moral question, not a political question. If you want to use religion to back your morals, I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm just interested in seeing how people back their claims from amoralperspective.

I never expected so many people to be okay with incest (view the rest of this thread for proof). This might have something to do with the rise in incest porn I keep hearing about.

"incest porn" is completely fake and plays upon an older hot woman taking advantage of her "son"

Its just a ploy on fantasies that some young men have about their mother, sort of like Oedipus Complex that is discussed in psychology.

Edit: For instance a little girl is going to "marry her daddy when she grows up" I realize that its in little children, but as science has shown, not everything is black and white and it might take a little longer to grow out of.

Plus, its on the side of "taboo", and people find those things quite alluring. I mean, one of the most famous adult movies of all time is called "taboo" and revolves around a mother and her son, all fake and actors, but the premise remains the same.

The issues the comparison raises for me;

a. two consenting adults is a combo. relatively rarely seen in incest
b. it's unlikely that incest would not hurt other people .. whether in the higher likelihood of genetic abnormalities in any offspring, or social ostracization from (and of) their families.

(The social ostracization used to apply to homosexuality too, but is much less now).

Yes to everything. And I don't have a problem legally with incest and children. The likelihood of birth defects is probably greater with drugs and alcohol and unless the baby comes out totally fuked up there are typically no consequences for the mother.

So weird I keep seeing Americans from "land of the free" come to conclusions that stop people being as free as possible.

I have no issues with pretty much all of your scenarios, except where it involves a parent and a child. I think that has obvious implications for abuse and given its already incredibly strange nature, I'd outlaw it just for the probability that it is an abusive relationship.

Gay brothers, I don't give a chit really. Wouldn't hang out with them but let them do what they want. The reason to outlaw two brothers getting married is the obvious sexist implications of outlawing brother-sister marriages, which I think should be outlawed given the poor genetic disposition that would come from that coupling. So outlawing the latter implicates the former.

Parent-child, brother-brother, sister-brother and sister-sister all outlawed with succinct arguments. What are yours against gay people?

Edit: I think adding the parameters of sterility as a basis for legality of marriage has obvious flaws as well in the hypothetical so I'm not going to address it.

I wish I could measure the rate of success of children from various households. My guess would be from most to least successful:

1.) Traditional family
2.) Two gay dads
3.) Divorce parents who are civil
4.) Single moms
5.) The weird chit OP posted
6.) Two lesbian moms

For the sake of argument, whether gay guys not related to each other or gay guys related to each other, chose to 'have' kids; they'd have to use a surrogate (an egg donor and a woman to carry to the pregnancy (if not the same person)) ... who would not be related to them.

(They could use a woman related to one of them and have the egg fertilised by the partner who's not related to her I suppose; no genetic link there).

I agree, but I bet it will lend a hand in "normalizing" incest. homosexuality was seen as taboo in the past, but today it's not. The same may happen with incest. I mean, look at the thread we are in. Many people are okay with incest. It won't be taboo for as long as you think.

did you not read the OP?

a. the situation is between two consenting incestuous adults. You have built up a strawman saying "rarely seen in incest." The question is when consent DOES occur in incest. Answer that, don't escape it.
b. again, did you not read the OP? I mentioned three scenarios where there ARE NOT any offspring. In addition, you mention social ostracization. Does this mean homosexuality is wrong, too? if so, then you are not the target audience in the OP. read the thread title.

interesting, but this is a moral question. not a legal question. does that change your answer at all?

i do think it's a travesty that pregnant women do drugs and drink :/

I was talking about an adult father and adult child. Like 50 and 30 years old. That's when they first have their incestuous relationship. Why is this morally wrong to you? I'm curious to know your rationale. If you use religion as your rationale, that's fine. I just want to know what the rationale is.

The only reason its not legal to marry/breed with a family member is because it causes a lot of very bad genetic diseases to start becoming a problem.

Besides that, As long as its not hurting anyone else do whatever the hell you want.

If you have a problem with that and start asking "Well what about a man and a chicken" You have missed the point and this can not be explained to you.
