Transgender weightlifter wins international womens competition, sets national record
New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has won an international powerlifting competition, raising questions about her participation and the new International Olympic Committee policy on transgender athletes.
Hubbard won the over-90kg division at the Australian International in Melbourne, lifting a combined total of 268kg, according to the New Zealand Herald. In doing so she set new national records in the snatch and clean and jerk, according to 1 News Now.
Before her transition, Hubbard competed in powerlifting as a man. Now a woman, she wants to continue to compete as her gender.
All of this has riled up some folks who see it as uneven playing fields. Garry Marshall, the president of Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand, said his governing body is simply applying the rules set forth by the IOC. Those rules allow Hubbard to compete as a woman after undergoing certain transitional steps.
With Hubbards eyes on bigger prizes, and the next Summer Olympic Games now three years away, this issue isnt going away anytime soon.

as someone who competes, setting records or winning is competitive as hell, for both male/female, training and peak to competition can be great, but come competition day... things change very fast cause the nature of the lifts, the most small technical error, mental, sleep, timing, speed, etc... not to mention not 100% knowing what numbers you may have to lift that day because of other competitors
it's very rare to see someone come into a competition and blow everyone else's numbers away unless they're competing in a very small or local meet... but being transgender, he doesn't have to worry about any of the above at all, of course he still has to train hard since the girls can snatch/c&j/squat than most guys who don't oly lift, given he takes training seriously, he can have a 'bad' day and his numbers are still gonna be better than the girls who bust their ass 365/7... and he's at 90kg+

even if it's not 'fair' for the transgender community, they need to change guidelines for being 'women' in sports, this a consequence transgender should face as making their choice, if no change happens, i see a new trend for sports happening in the near future....

If you are highly athletic just say you're a woman and start dominating womens sports for the $$$$.
There are going to hundreds of guys who aren't good enough to hit the male elite tier but still dominate women. If I was a male tennis player ranked 600th in the world I would just say I was a woman and be #1 and win the same prize money as men for less work! (3 sets instead of 5 in majors)
