He was one of the greatest military leaders in history. In all of history. Not just American history. The guy was a brilliant tactician and a great and loyal American. As another poster has already stated: Lee was loyal to his state and its people, his people. He wasn't going to fight against his family, his friends, his fellow Virginians.

Most of them just absolutely resent at any history before the 1960s. Founding fathers? Bunch of slave owners. Revolutionary war? War against a country that abolished slavery before us. Mexican American war? A country with slaves invaded another country. Civil war? A war all about slavery(hundreds of thousands of white people were at each other's throats because of slaves). WW1 and WW2? Wars that the US fought in while we had segregation.

That's it really. It's whitewashing history. Tell the history as it happened. Good and bad. Having slaves and fighting for the confederacy doesn't take away any of the good. They are two completely different things. Show both. Teach both. Don't try to scrub it out of our history.
