Teenager pinned under bench press dies

Ben Shaw, 15, dies after being found pinned under PCYC gym equipment
The 15-year-old boy who was found pinned underneath gym equipment at Pine Rivers PCYC on Tuesday night has died in hospital.
The teenager's rugby league club has posted a tribute on Sunday, saying the teenager died on Saturday afternoon at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

"On behalf of Pine Central Holy Spirit Rlfc, I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the Shaw family," club president Sharon Hickey wrote.
"Yesterday afternoon they lost their beautiful Ben and has been able to leave a legacy by donating his tissue and organs to enable recipients have their lives saved and changed forever as a result.
"As a club, we will be assisting to see the world through Ben's eyes and ensure his legacy lives on in support of his parent's and family."

Friends took to social media to pay tribute to the teenager.
"Ben Shaw, you helped me through so much! I'm so thankful for it! You were my best friend and you will be missed so much!" one wrote.
"I will never forget all of our good times together and how we always used to hang, you where (sic) always there for me rest in peace and fly high my angel you will be missed."
Another posted: "Rest in peace you legend, you will be missed."
"Never thought id (sic) have to say this so early in life but rest in peace brother," a third wrote.

It is understood Mr Shaw had been working out on the bench-press at the Pine Rivers gym about 8pm when equipment came down on his neck.
A staff member reportedly found the teenager about 20 minutes later, pinned under a98-kilogram benchpress.
He was given first aid by staff and other gym members before paramedics rushed him to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
According to PCYC gym and fitness centre policy and procedures, children under the age of 16 must complete an induction with a parent or guardian and must be supervised while at the gym.
PCYC officials said the Pine Rivers branch would remain closed until further notice and said they would co-operate fully with the Workplace Health and Safety investigation.

98 kg = 216 lb...

phuck benching man

216 lb weight can phucking kill you? That's like nothing too...

Edit: Ya it must have hit his neck, phuck man. That's why I prefer DB. At least you can drop it. It could still injure you, but it is less likely.

Bench press never again...DB chest press for life...better engagement according to EMG studies, and u can just rotate your shoulders and drop the weight if it gets too hard without killing yourself. Seriously, DB chest is just better. No reason to bench unless you are a monster going for ridiculous str gains, and in that case, you know what you are risking because if you drop that weight, you are done.

Also, suicide grip is very very bad.

RIP. I never use a spotter but i know my limits and always leave clips off in case of a muscle tear or something where i need to dump it, but as a kid where you don't even really know your limits yet you should always have one. Sad way to go.

That's a lot of weight for a 15 year old. This **** has happened to me before as well that's why you don't put clips on so you can tip the bar to one side to make the plates fall off.

You mean like this? Incorporates more of the pec muscles in the lift and shorter ROM lets you go heavier

Guys that are commenting that he never could possibly do 98kg looking the way he did, guys are forgetting the rules of engagement. Always add one extra plate to each side before calling 911.

He might have just dropped it.

Some real morons ITT

How can 216 pounds kill you? well first of all the kid was 15 years old.. you don't know if he dropped it on himself or where the pressure was. I bet i could kill you with 216lbs just dropping it from less than 2 feet above your chest

Also puts pressure on the shoulder point. The elbow tuck is incredibly important.

Also scary chit. He was probably ego lifting and doing half reps, but most people that lift alone have had a close call or two.

I bet he was using the fabled suicide grip.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.
