Misc Motorcylce crew help me out (300k reps)

I'm interested in taking a course and learning how to ride and getting my first bike.

Any recommendations for a good first bike for a novice? Here's what i'm looking for...

Something that's very reliable
Reasonably priced
Something that looks cool as fuk
Something that i wont grow out of very fast. I'd like something that once i become a better rider i can still stick with the bike and not become bored with it.

I appreciate any feedback.

I've got a Hornet 600 and a BMW f800s

Hornet is fun as hell, sounds awesome and is quick as fuk but less beginner friendly and not very comfortable either.

The BMW is nice and comfy, is fast enough, broad range of power right from low revs and is a relaxing ride if you want it to be. Still fast and a blast when you tell it to do that kind of thing but not completely insane 14k rpm like the hornet.

I'd recommend something sub 100hp to begin with. Take that as you will. In the end you'll just get what you want anyway. The best thing you can do is go and try 3-4 bikes and get a feel for what fits you. Everything will feel fast as fuk to begin with anyway, dat instant throttle response.

I have a Yamaha FZ-07. It was reasonably priced. It's easy to ride, yet powerful/torquey enough to scare you if you try. I really like the naked bike style, so I think it looks cool

Just sold my Hayabusa and bought a VRSC and I am pretty happy. Lower maintenance, a lot more comfortable, still drops panties.

Either of those make excellent starter bikes.

If you're into the sport category, ninja 300 hands down (a lot of people will vouch for the ninja 300). I think the ninja 400 also came out and it got lots of good reviews.

Got my motorcycle license a couple years ago and still have the bike I started with. Good thinking with taking a rider course. You'll learn and practice alot of things you might otherwise not think about that can really come in handy when learning to ride. If it's the MSF course you'll get a discount on your insurance while also getting your motorcycle license at the end (at least in Georgia)

I bought a Suzuki c50 boulevard which makes a good starter bike IMO as it has enough power to keep you satisfied for awhile, but not enough where things may get sketchy when you're learning to ride (850 cc). A lot of people vouch for the honda shadows as good starter bikes (750 cc), but I don't have any personal experience.

The boulevards are very reasonably priced, shaft driven (no chain or belt), fuel injected (no carburetor or choke to deal with), is pretty damn reliable, and a nice looking bike if your into cruisers.

You can get the standard model or all blacked out BOSS. They also make a larger C90 BOSS that has around 1450 cc, but it is a larger bike and may not be the best to start out on.

Only negative with the blacked out version is that there don't seems to be a lot of aftermarket blacked-out exhausts if you're wanting a louder/meaner sound. When I bought my bike it already had chrome vance and hines, so not sure what the stock exhausts sound like.

Thanks guys. I’ll give reps out on recharge.

Also I have heard bikes are so reliable and a lot of people end up selling them with low miles so they are worth buying used.

What are your thoughts on that? Worth it to pay cheaper for a used bike or just go for a new one?

Don't listen to anyone recommending a 250cc/300cc, they're crap and you'll be bored of it after a week. Srs.

And the guys recommending Hayabusas or litre bikes are just messing... Or want to see you dead tbh.

Sweet spot is the 600cc sportsbike class or 650cc V twin class (my first bike was a Suzuki sv650s that I had for two years before getting a litre bike (Daytona 955i), tons of fun. And very forgiving as a new rider. From the former class, look at CBR 600s and GSXR 600s... I'd personally recommend an older CBR 600f4i.

But only you can determine which bike is right for you, try sitting on a bunch untill you find a riding position you find comfortable.

REMEMBER TO WEAR GEAR AND RIDE SAFE!

TL;DR:

-CBR600
-Sv650s

What style of bike are you going for and what price range? New or used? That would probably help. If you are going the sport route you have a lot of options. Like mentioned above the ninja 300/400 would be good. You could look into something like an sv650 or ninja 650 to last you a little longer if you plan on keeping it for a while and stay away from a actual super-sport. If you want to go a fun route for something reliable and you can throw around there are some supermoto options like a drz400sm.

I'd definitely recommend a used bike to start off with or just in general. A lot of people buy some brand new bikes and unload them pretty quickly realizing riding is not for them.

Definitely look at used bikes, you might find a gem and save a chitload of cash. Especially for a first bike, you're very likely to lay it down sooner or later (I certainly did).

You can buy a ninja 300, learn/practice on it for like 6-12 months or when you get bored, then sell it for the same amount money you bought it for. These starter bikes are always in high demand because of how many people buy it as a first bike.

I learned how to ride on a Saturday back in the day. Picked up a 650 Katana for 1K but never got my license so I sold it a year later.
I'm 5'10" so that was about the right size for me, a little faster than I needed but I kept it under control.

My 17 yr old son and I both wanted to get our bike license. So last fall, we tookhttps://loremotorcycleeducation.com/this class together over a weekend and we both came out of it with our licenses. I definitely recommend a class for a first time rider; even someone with some experience. There was a guy in our class who had been riding bikes for years without a license and he almost didn't pass the final road test.
So, first time bikes can be a tricky thing; sure, a Ninja 250 is a great starter bike but, yes, you will grow out of it quickly. So what do you do? Jump on a 600? Not a good idea either. There is a huge power difference from a 250-500 and a 600. My son ended up buying a nice, clean, with records, Ninja 250 and he just accepts that he will need to upgrade in another year or 2. My advice would be to be patient and wait for a smokin deal on something like a Ninja 250-400 and just realize you will want to upgrade. If you buy it right, you will get your money back on it in a couple years anyway if you take care of it. I ride a Suzuki 500 and it's all I need; but I'm an old guy.
Buy a good, properly fitting helmet and jacket; be safe!

It wouldn't be horrible. You just have to be the one to be honest with yourself as far as your riding skills.

Can confirm, I am house. And a Ninja 300 owner. Bought it as my first bike. Hung onto it when I upgraded too because it's so perfect for quick runs into the city and also on twisty as fuk little sections of road. I paid $5000AUD for mine in 2013, and I believe they're even cheaper now. So I would highly recommend one.

As long as you have self-control you should be fine but it's not recommended. The problem with the 600 is that the throttle is a lot less forgiving so one slip up could cause you to go down. My friend started on a zx6r and then moved up to a 1000 after about 8 months and he's perfectly fine and comfortable.

EDIT: When I'm talking about the unforgiving 600's I just mean sport bikes/inline 4's since that's what you're interested in.

Ikr. You can have a lot of fun on them especially in the twisties. The people that say the bike is boring are usually speed junkies who just wanna go fast.

I've owned tons of bikes. Most experienced riders will suggest you start with something used that isn't a supersport/600cc 4 inline.
