I think i finally understand severely depressed suicidal people...

They want release from their mental torture/struggle. They're just completely sick and tired of trying and failing over and over. However, that is not the death nail... it's the fact that through all this struggle they feel so alone and therefore hopeless. They usually have two types of friends/family. The first type are just completely clueless to the subtle cries for help that the person doesn't want to even engage those people. Those people might even say, "Well he/she started to push me away." Then you have the second type that isn't completely clueless but they aren't willing to move mountains to help. They'll be there on a superficial level (talking/encouragement), but they wont do the necessary thing which is to break down the persons door and carry them back from the abyss.

I think this is the reason why you see so many of these stories end with friends and family saying, "I didn't think they ever would. They seemed okay. They seemed like they were doing better. We just talked yesterday. I'm so shocked." It's that kind of cluelessness from friends/family that I think drives depressed people to feel so alone.

The real bich of the problem is that most people in this state tend to do all kinds of things to push people away which just exacerbates the problem. Most people probably mischaracterize them as lazy when they're really just mentally trapped and need a mentor to guide them back.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do. You can kick in the door, get them out of the house, have hours of conversation but in the end it always ends up circular. The next day all the hard work you put in is all gone as if they deleted a 2-3 hour long discussion you had just the other day and and back to square one. For some they are so far gone nothing you do or say can help them, they need to be willing to change and help themselves, if not theirs nothing that anyone can do.

Maybe. But, the effort I'm talking about isn't just simply having a discussion, a long discussion, or multiple discussions. I'm talking like intervention level stuff that needs to happen.

I entered a thread where you posted about your enlightening realization about suicide. Congrats on finally being able to wrap your head around something most people have an understanding of after watching a suicide hotline commercial.

Most people have a good grasp of the logistics of mental health problems? I'm not sure that anyone in the field would agree with you. Your aggressiveness with the OP is strange. I'm genuinely curious what aspect of his post triggered such a negative reaction in you. You are definitely hoisting something onto him beyond what he posted.

If what’s going on in the op constitutes a better than average grasp of mental health problems then it’s no wonder so many crazy people are running around out there

My interpretation of his original quote is that the only real salvation is relearning to trust/believe in yourself. Other people might be necessary to guide you... but salvation ultimately rests within you.

Most people have no idea how to help someone with serious depression and though ignorance certainly play it's part, it's not totally their fault. Unless someone has been there it is impossible for them to actually understand how your mood is not totally governed by life situation so you get stupid chit like "other people have it worse than you".

It's hard to 'understand' depression because it is different for so many people and it's a case by case basis. Many people have different triggers that cause depression. Some people with similar experiences may not even experience depression.

Best thing you can do is empathize and help those that are depressed.

We also naturally surround ourselves with people on our wavelength which doesn't help. I can't imagine anything worse for the situation than two depressed people commiserating. I'm pretty sure most of the people i talk with regularly are at the least mildly depressed. I tend to think those that are capable of helping probably aren't naturally around those that need the help.
