Ocean's 8 stars blame dominance of white male critics for film's mixed reviews
https://www.theguardian.com/film/201...n-film-reviews
Stars of Ocean’s 8, the heist movie featuring all-female leads, have accused male critics of failing to appreciate their film.
Speaking to Yahoo Movies, Mindy Kaling called the dominance of white male reviewers “unfair”. “If I had to base my career on what white men wanted I would be very unsuccessful, so there is obviously an audience out there who want to watch things like [Ocean’s 8], what I work on, what Sarah [Paulson] works on.”
Co-star Cate Blanchett concurred, saying the media had failed to make the mindshift the movie industry had when it came to gender equality. “The conversation has to change,” she said, “and the media has a huge responsibility.”
A study by USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative was released earlier this week, examining the gender and ethnic profile of US critics who wrote about last year’s 100 most successful films found 80% were men and 82% white.
When your all-female cast movie doesn't do well, as usual, just blame it on the cis white male. Now its the white male critics who are to blame for another chit lefty experiment.Speaking to Yahoo Movies, Mindy Kaling called the dominance of white male reviewers “unfair”. “If I had to base my career on what white men wanted I would be very unsuccessful, so there is obviously an audience out there who want to watch things like [Ocean’s 8], what I work on, what Sarah [Paulson] works on.”

Critics have given it a higher rating (fresh), than the audience has (rotten)...

Among the top critics on the first page
12 ratings: Good x7(2 female, 5 male), Bad x5(2female, 3 male)
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/oceans_8/
I know this is not representative, but they seem to be getting more good reviews from dudes.
Also Cate Blanchet has played in some truly brillant movies, she should know that this is at best forgettable popcorn cinema even if it is pretty great.

Wah rinse repeat.
lol at blaming the audience. If you're blaming your customers you are in the wrong business. If 50 shades of grey was geared towards males it would have done way worse. There's two sides of that coin. You can't blame people for genuinely not being interested in something.

They could have made a movie with at least some available action actresses like Kate Beckinsale & Milla Jovovich. I'm assuming they didn't want to throw down the money so the real sexism is on Hollywood AS IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN.

So they made a movie geared towards a smaller segment of the population but expect everyone to love just because?
F*ck these people.

The movie Annihilation, starring natalie portman, was an all female cast, all strong brilliant women, was extremely well reviewed, think 82% on rottentomatoes, and failed miserably. Whos fault was that?
I enjoyed the movie, thought it was pretty good. Definitely not for everyone, slow ambiguous sci-fi.

The budget was around 45M with a limited theatrical release and they made that back within the two weeks it was out before going digital distribution. It wasn't really successful but I am not sure what they expected with that type of strategy.

Ive never seen a trailer for it on youtube or other media that I utilize. This typically means the test group and big wigs gave the final product mixed or thumbs down reviews. Has nothing to do with skin color - money talks. They would promote the ever f ing chit out of it if test groups made it clear it was going to be the next guardians of the galaxy.

I think my point is why didnt hollywood get behind this movie? When ghostbusters came out thats all you heard, all female! all scientists! That movie was garbage. Heres a serious movie, with all female scientists ( 1 paramedic), the feminists should have been linin up
